Great quiet ski slopes ideal for beginners and intermediates or even more competent skiers who have a hankering for lots of stops at little rifugios and bars on the slopes.
Chiesa often feels like a private ski resort during the week... but it gets very very busy at weekends with the Milanese arriving in large noisy numbers. Still great fun as the people seems to disappear up on the slopes into thin air...
Lovely warm friendly locals. Great value skiing. Lots of snow canons. You can ski the entire resort in a day though, but there is the left side of the slope, then next time the right side of the slope, then next time try to change your technique a little... it is great!

Great skiing facilities, beautiful views in summer or winter. Have now been there for the last three years. A really relaxing place in the summer and the rifugio is worth a visit for the view and the food!

This is a great area of piste that you reach from the cable car from Chiesa in Valmalenco. During the week (particularly Tues-Thurs) it is quiet, but at weekends is swelled with Milanese. There is a good variety of pistes, a good ski school, places for cross country skiing, and is used for competition for free style snowboarding, and when I was there the Russian free style ski team was there practicing for the winter Olympics (which are in Russia this year!).
It's not like some resorts that you can ski down to the village you are staying in, but other than that it is good. In very snowy winters they sometimes open the pistes in the next village (Caspoggio) that used to hold downhill ski races. So look out to see if they open it when you are there.

First time visit to Valmenco skiing area. Caters for all ages, different levels and types of skiing experience, including lessons for beginners, etc. Efficient cable car service. Very nice restaurant offering a wide range of items. A most enjoyable experience. Beautiful surrounding panoramic views.

We went last weekend to partecipate at HAM radio VHF IARU Contest.
We had lot of boxes, luggage, big antennas...
All the people working at the funicola were very kind in helping us to unload and load the material on the funicular.
Nice and Great service, Nice view, Palu' lake, lot of restaurant and hotel on the top.
Very well maintained and very well managed.
We'll be back for sure again.
DOG Friendly everywhere, also on the funicular.

This is where you will find really good skiing and fabulous food. Take one of the worlds biggest gondolas from Chiesa and on the other side of the mountain is a beautiful valley with long slopes and dusins of small restaurants where they serve fantastic food. You will find a slope for every preference, running from approx 2400 m down to approx 1000 m. Not the biggest ski resort in Europe, but definitely the place to be for those seeking good skiing and good dining! Also very popular during summer season - offering a beautiful trail to Switzerland (St. Moritz is very close).

We have just returned from a half-term ski holiday and found great ski school options for kids (book ahead as far as possible) and good skiing options for beginners and intermediate skiing.

What is the closest airport and from there most sensible choice to get to the resort?

The closest airport in italy is Orio al Serio, then you can rent a car. i don't know if there's a bus from Orio to Valmalenco.
