San Giovanni is a typical church if it’s period and is the main parish in Chiavari.during the years it has had as Parish priest Saint Antonio Maria Gianelli known to have saved Chiavari from the plague. He carried the famous Black Cross to the main square and swollows appeared in the sky meaning the plague had left. Today you can admire the Cross in the side alter.

While researching ancient churches in Chiavari, I noticed this one close to the Cathedral Dell'Orto and glad I took the time to wander over to it. It's maybe a 5-10 minute walk to this cathedral and is hidden among the narrow streets of the old town of Chiavari. However, one will be rewarded by the beautiful artwork, every bit as good, yet different than that of the other cathedral. Well worth the walk to see!
