About
The villa is a beautiful example of Art Nouveau Architecture. Designed by architect Alfredo Campanini, it was built at the beginning of the XXth century for Davide Bernasconi, owner of the silk factory with the same name. The exterior facades are enriched with decoration like silkwarms, butterflies and mulberry leaves related to silk production. Villa Bernasconi is an innovative museum; the museum is a "talking house".

Beautiful surprise. We just discovered it by chance, only briefly walked around it. Next time we’ll have enough time to go and visit it properly. Many are not aware that once upon a time, silk was a very sought after luxury material (textile) and that Como was most probably the world capital for its production. Plenty of paid parking in the area. Cute little eatery on the grounds running it for a
good cause. Enjoy! Can also be reached on foot (about 15 min) from the ferry arrival.

PS To the Webmaster: please correct one word. It is silk worms and not silk warms.

Piero (Lugano / Switzerland).

On arrival, we were greeted by a friendly member of staff, given a letter about the villa and offered water and sweets. We enjoyed a completely different experience inside - very contemporary, informative, interactive and creative. It was very quiet, so we enjoyed the villa almost to ourselves. We enjoyed the tour inside but also the unique look of the villa from outside especially the intricate stonework. It was a short walk from the ferry, so easily accessible. Worth a visit if you are in Cernobbio.

we took a bus from Como to Cernobbia and then the ferry back to Como. The Villa Bernasconi's interior is only open when there is a special exhibit, but the outside is well worth the visit. No charge and you can walk around the house. It's a villa, but considerably smaller than the Villa Olma, Villa Erba, or other prominent villas. I love Art Nouveau and the Como area has many fine examples. This house is "over the top" with every floral ceramic tile, wrought-iron detail, concrete embellishment, etc. possible but a marvel.

Villa Bernasconi opened this year as a new and 'original' museum to the public in Cernobbio having been newly restored. The Villa self-narrates and leads the visitors quietly through it's unusual modern and rather sparse interior, telling the tale about its history and the stories of people who lived there. The members of staff are friendly and eager to assist with information.
It is beautiful example of Art Nouveau architecture built at the beginning of the 20th century for Davide Bernasconi, the owner of the silk factory with the same name. The exterior is unique in design relating to the owners silk production with decorations such as silkwarms, butterflies and mulberry leaves. It is open every afternoon through Monday to Friday and all day at weekends. Tickets are just 8E. Be prepared for an unusual visit.

The Sunday morning we stopped in we were the only visitors, so we had the sense of a private tour--the staff were enthusiastic and eager to answer questions. The house itself has gone through many owners since its heyday, so not all of the original detail is there, but the exhibits make up for that by providing a lot of historical background. A couple of points that come through clearly: to in the early 20th century, women in the region routinely did grueling factory work from age 12 and were happy to have work. And this magnificent mansion was literally right in the center of the factories and worker tenements.

The Villa is closed for renovations until December 2018. A small sign is on the door . It would be useful if the information was more readily available so visitors were not let down.

The Art Nouveau (‘Liberty’) architecture is the star of this museum. Be sure to explore the outside, that gate etc. if you decide to pay the €8 entrance fee, look at the exhibits, pick up the phone (if you speak some Italian) but don’t forget to look at the windows, ceilings, handrails and doors, or you would miss the great design!

This "house museum" is along the main road north from Como, but kind of hidden because it's set back from the road, but just look for the address and you'll find it. First off, the staff were very welcoming and their English was excellent. Everything was well presented and I liked the "explore and touch and open things" idea which I have not seen elsewhere. I loved the artwork, so unique, especially so much art deco. The turn-of-the-century menus were something very unique. The museum is very small and we were through before we wanted to be. Be sure to examine the exterior of the building as well. You can do it all in less than an hour. There is a cafe beside the main building.

Using a variety of multimedia techniques they have designed many different interactions with the history of this house. The ideas of the architect and the position of the owner in society come together to recreate the later part of the 19th century and his family into the 20th century.

So much more than what you might expect from a museum. Strongly recommend and an hour of humour time.

Dear RMYardley, thank you very much for your appreciation. We’re glad you enjoyed the museum and that you shared your experience on Tripadvisor. Come back soon to visit the “speaking house”, we’re planning amazing innovations! You’ll find them on facebook, twitter, instagram and pinterest.
