We really liked this little town. The Via Delle Volte is just what it says a short street built into the side of the hill on which the town is sited which has a low stone vault covering its entire length. Apparently originally built so that horse riders could go right round the fortress on horseback. Today it houses small boutiques and cafes , and a spa. A slightly negative point, there are a number of window openings pierced in the outer wall , which due to the sheer drop outside are glazed to allow visitors to catch glimpses of the beautiful Chianti countryside. Regrettably many of these are cracked or broken ( presumably by vandals ) and as Castellina in Chianti does not have the hordes of tourists that Florence is plagued with, ( thankfully!) they are not repaired.

Walk in the hidden alleys of a small medieval town of the Chianti Classico. The ancient building of the Municipality now houses some Etruscan artifacts discovered in the area surrounding the city.

Via del Volte has two entrances off the main drag (via del Ferruccio) and provides excellent panoramic views of the valley below. There are several very nice shops along the way, one of which we would recommend (a shoe and leather goods store-the only one). Also, there is an interesting variety store immediatley next door that has everything from aprons to fine cashere sweaters and capes, to a variety of kitchen utencils made of olive wood. The proprietress, who once lived in England, and whose English was excellent, was very friendly and helpful. I ended up buying a leather jacket there on sale!
Via Volte will only take 10 minutes to walk unless you stop at a shop or two, and is well worth the time.

We stopped here along the way up to the winery and it was an amazing experience to just walk around and see this incredible stonework. The little shops and dining places were so charming and romantic. Would've loved to have had the chance to spend a little more time there browsing around. I also loved that you could get a feel of true authentic Italian culture. So glad we stopped here.

The office of tourism suggested that we take this short stroll to check out the historic castle part of the town. It was a quiet day and the walk was very relaxing. We enjoyed seeing the old and well preserved wall/castle structure in the town.

Castellina is a walled town and the Via dells Volte gives you the opportunity to meander along underneath the town walls. You can marvel at how thick the walls are as you stroll along the short passageway past restaurants and an Enoteca , gift shops including an excellent shop specialising in fabulous photos of the surrounding area. If you start at the end opposite the church you will end up outside a fabulous gelateria where fantastic ice cream awaits.

This is a covered walkway which runs alongside the Main Street of the town.
Inside are a number of shops, restaurants and residences. At the south end there is an excellent gelatarria - where you can get a superb icecream.
Don't miss the views out over the valleys to the east either.

We happened upon this wonderful tunnel after exciting through the back of a wine shop where we tasted delicious wines and balsamic. We simply love the charm and feeling of "stepping back in time" that this gem of a city provides. Walking through the tunnel provides surprises at every turn and is the perfect place to visit on a rainy day in Tuscany! You won't get wet and you can shop, eat and taste wine to your heart's content. The vendors are all incredibly friendly and welcoming. The leather shop has amazing goods at unbeatable prices compared to other places we visited. Also, you must visit the Andrea Rotini gallery. His unique cibachrome photographs of the region are truly breathtaking. He even signed my purchase! This was our favorite day in Tuscany, simply perfect. Our boys, 9 and 10 voted Castellina as having the BEST gelato during our trip - which included Rome, Venice and Tuscany.

This is a little tunnel road that skirts the east side of the town, parallel to the main street through town. There is a great little leather store there that sells beautiful hand-made leather goods (very pretty purses, especially) for less than half of most shops in Sienna or Florence. The proprietor (a young lady) is very friendly and her English is quite good. There is also an excellent gelatto store near the south entrance of the road. There are little restaurants, other shops and a little art gallery down there. It is not at all scary or sketchy, and it is definitely worth a little stroll when in Castellina.
