Fascinating museum

Great museum with lovely crystals and information about the sulphur mining industry. Kind people let us in even though the museum had just closed- the website says it closes at 1.30 but in fact they like to close at 1 pm

Vast collection with the intention of good display - learn about the Sulphur boom & disappeared wealth of mining

You need to be somewhat persistent in working out how to get into the Museo which is hidden away alongside a technical college up the Viale della Regione. Do try and engage the curator in conversation as this will assist you to understand what you are seeing. Sulphur was the staple mineral which generated huge wealth for this region for over 100 years until the opening up of North American mines which more than likely took sicilian workers to excavate there! With the collapse in demand the whole of this region suffered - Yet the conditions IN THE mines was fairly appalling, and reminded me of the profound issues we had in the UK on children in mining and disastrous impacts on male health, A great deal to take in - with only a couple of videos to help you along - I look forward to some more investment to tell more of the geological and social story behind the vast range of mainly locally occurring minerals on display - though there are samples from international mineral sites due to the academic legacy of this museum.

A museum - unique of this kind in Sicily
Jan 2016 • Friends
This museum is far from the way of an ordinary traveler to Sicily, but it is known among the locals , especially living in Caltanissetta province, who care about the islands' recent past.
It was eye-opening to listen to the guide explaining the role of sulfur in Sicily in XX century - the museum has documention on the mining activities of the ancient sulfur mines, and detailed geological maps of all the island.
A must-visit for geologists and vulcanologists on a trip to Sicily, and those who have time to explore the island really off the beaten track.

It has a great amount of minerals from all over the world collected by the Mineral School "Mcttura " to which the museum belongs.

great location and fascinating display of minerals and precious stones ,together with maps , utensils, instruments of local mines and models of the tunnels and the processing of Sulfer in old times
A Must to see how nature can give birth to so many precious beauties

It is also a Palantheological Museum
