After walking 23ks to Bolsena today on the Via Francigena I was very much looking forward to going into the church but on our arrival it was closed and there was no sign that it was going to be open anytime soon. I read a lot about the church. It was disappointing.

The Collegiata di Santa Cristina, was built during the 11th century with a 15th century facade. It is famous for being the site of an Eucharistic miracle, known as the Bolsena miracle, which took place here in 1263. The church is a mix of Romanesque and Baroque features with an interesting cave-chapel with 15th century frescoes

We were here during the festival Corpus Domini from 27 May - 3 June 2018. On 3 June in the evening there was concerto “in Viaggio con Mozart” Franco Gena musica, presto la Basilica Di Santa Cristina.

It is practically two churches. On the left is the chapel dedicated to the miracle of Bolsena, a baroque building. On the right and adjacent is the old renaissance basilica

You definitely want to pay the small euro fee to have access to the catacombs and necropolis. Great museum. Guides very helpful.

I am not sure if we would have visited this church had we not been staying near Bolsena but it would have been a shame to miss it. It has a very old part, a baroque part and some catacombs. It's claim to fame is based on the story of the Miracle of the Eucharist although the actual relic in question was taken to Orvieto. There is a small fee to visit the catacombs and they are not very extensive. However the enclosed area does include the tomb of Santa Christina and some archaeological exhibits. We were given a brief introduction by a charming gentleman but his English was limited. Definitely worth a look.

A very beautiful church that comes with a very interesting history. The catacombs are a must, make sure you leave time tor them. If you are lucky enough to be there for the festival you'll experience something special.
