We saw this as we walked towards Bolsena and the closer we walked the more impressive it got until we finally reached it and it still looked impressive as we looked up from down at the lake. It offers stunning views out over the town and the lake.

There is steep road going up to the Castello. There are also steps leading up from the middle of town. DON'T go up the steps unless you are young and agile. They get steeper and steeper and more and more sloping and then the handrail gives out.... At the top is a small, very interesting archeological museum which also has great books.

My girlfriend and I visited the castle in the morning. The aquariums with aquatic life as found in the area are nice and the exposition about archeological findings were nice as well. You have a magnificent panorama view from the tower onto the lake. A must see when visiting the region.

The castle is dominating / amazing. On the other hand, 5 euro for about 20 fish tanks and a one room museum? The one cool thing is the view from the wall walk on the castle top. I feel ok about spending ONE euro to do this one thing. We paid 5 euros each, for a pitiful one room museum and an 'aquarium'? I'm here to save you a few euro, my son's saltwater fish tank at home was better than this aquarium.

The castle is small and the upper walls give you a nice view on the lake. The Etruscan exhibition is from the seventies: outdated (most pamphlets are even written on a classic typewriter from the pre-Commodore64 period). In the basement there is an “aquarium” probably from the seventies too. The tanks are dirty, pipes are leaking. Unworthy to keep animals in at today’s standards. A scandal to ask an entrance fee for this. The animals should be released and the aquarium should be closed immediately.

A hidden jewel, we stumbled across Bolsena and fell in love with medieval charm, the friendly people and the beautiful views of the lake and countryside.

Plenty to see when you arrive panting at the top of the hill. Found an easier way down into town that avoided steps.

5 Euros entry for all the exhibits, I thought it was quite interesting and great views from the ramparts. There is a guide in English that you can borrow when you go round

The walled community of Monaldeschi was prestine and breath-taking. The age and construction of the castle structures were inspiring

Buon pomeriggio, Journey48. Non saprei. Provi a telefonare all'Ufficio Turistico di Bolsena (+39 0761 799923).
