About
Well known as "The Villa of the Ladies" and included in UNESCO'list of World Heritage Sites, Villa Angarano of the five sistes Bianchi Michiel in Bassano del Grappa was designed by Andrea Palladio and modern wine-growing acompany in conversion to organic wine production. We welcome enthusiasts of architecture and winelovers and we organize guided visits through the Palladian Porches and the vineyards with tastings of wine and extra virgin olive oil inside the Ancient Stables.

Our first stop after leaving Venice was at Villa Angarano, a winery owned by the 5 Bianchi Michiel sisters, for a tour and a wine tasting. We found it fascinating that this winery has only been owned and operated by women for over 700 years. My husband discovered it when he was looking for Palladian villas – those villas designed by architect Andrea Palladio, all of whose buildings were erected in the Veneto, with most villas listed by UNESCO as part of a World Heritage Site. The oldest sister, Carla, warmly greeted us and had a staff member, Ilaria (who spoke excellent English), show us around the grounds. It is a stately Palladian Villa; however, because it is their home, we were not able to tour the inside of the villa. Ilaria took us for a nice walk around the villa and grounds. We were able to enter the Chapel of S. Maria Maddalena, probably designed by Margutti himself. The exterior of the historical building is adorned by 18 statues. We were also able to see the stunning Old Stable, which has recently been restored to look just as it did when it was built. The names of the horses that lived here are memorialized in wooden plaques over the stalls. The Old Stable is now used for wine tastings and dinners. We only wish we could have attended a dinner in this stunning venue. We then tasted some of their wines, along with some pleasant food – cheeses and salami. It turned out that one of the sisters, who is a writer and an artist, lives close to my sister in Umbria. (Small world!). We thoroughly enjoyed our wine tasting and tour.

Our visit here was arranged as part of a day trip out of Venice. We expected only a simple wine tasting, so were pleased to have a tour of the grounds, garden and chapel, as well as a chance to learn some history of the property. (The teenage boys liked the resident dogs!) After the tour we were taken to the renovated stable where an elegant table had been prepared for our family group of 8. Surprisingly, no smell of horses lingers in the stable. The wine and olive oil were excellent. They provided soft drinks and juice for the two teenagers. We all liked the sausage, cheese and bread. This turned out to be the best stop during our van tour.
