About
This marvelous bridge made in wood, named Ponte Degli Alpini, is dated from 1209, although it was rebuilt some times along the centuries. It is also called Ponte Vecchio, and the view one can enjoy from it, over the Brenta river and facing the Alpes during the Winter, is simply great !

The symbol of the town is the medieval Ponte degli Alpini, spanning the river Brenta. The first mention of this bridge dates back to the 11th century. The river on which it stands is relatively small, but with a very strong and aggressive current, due to which the structure was repeatedly destroyed. The city authorities restored it every time in the same form as it was created in 1569 by the famous architect Andrea Palladio. Today, the bridge, as in the old days, resembles a beautiful ship conquering the stormy greenish waters of the river.

The bridge is characterized by its old wooden cover, that protects the passers. The old Venetian construction unites the two banks of Branta river, although during the Middle Ages there was an older bridge at the same point. It is a beautiful highlight of the town. The view to the bridge is amazing from the balcony of Palazzo Sturm in via Campo Mazzo.

It is the most famous place of Bassano. It is a wooden construction and freshly renovated. From the bridge, you have a nice view on the old town or doen to the Brenta river. Near or at the beginning or end of the bridge, there are some bars, where you can have a drink. I highly recommend to take time for a drink there. Also the shop of the famous Nardini destillery, where you can buy the famous grappa, is at the beginning of the bridge.

Beautiful wooden bridge over the River Brenta in the centre of town.
From it there are lovely views of the Brenta and the mountains in the distance.
Vice versa there is a great view of the bridge from the courtyard of Palazzo Sturm (as well as from many other points of course).

Really lovely covered wooden bridge with a very wide pedestrian thoroughfare. Fabulous views to the hills and mountains with the river on the foreground. Cooler on a hot summers day here than the rest of the town. Grappa and ceramics outles either side of the bridge plus a selection of bars and cafes in this traditional architectural area. Do go and see for yourself.

Bassano del Grappa is a place that it is difficult to visit if nobody told you about. When, prior to my trip to Italy, I asked to my son's Italian teacher about the Veneto region; he did not hesitate and told me: just do not miss two places: my town, Treviso and Bassano del Grapa. He was totally right!
We started the trip from Venice with a rented car and did a one-day round trip of about 160 Km.; visiting Treviso, Montebeluna, Bassano del Grapa and Padua. Ideally you can buy good bread and prosciutto, a nice bottle of chianti at some of the paninoteca in Venice and enjoy the lunch at some of the breathtaking scenarios you'll visit during this journey.
The treasure of the trip is Bassano del Grappa and its wooden bridge, The medieval city dates from 998 and the symbol of the town is the covered "Ponte degli Alpini"; a wooden pontoon bridge designed by the architect Andrea Palladio in 1569.
The town is beautifull and has many other attractions such as Il Duomo (The Cathedral) and the Castello Superiore (Upper Castle), nice bars and coffe shops and of course is the place to taste one of the Italian national symbols: the Grappa made by distilling the skins, pulp, seeds, and stems left over from winemaking after pressing the grapes.
Two excellent places to buy some gifts after your visit are the Grapperia Bartolo Nardini and the Poli Distillerie; you'll find both stores at the two ends of the bridge.

Everyone rated this very highly, so we walked over, and though it looked impressive from a side view,it’s under renovation. Disappointed.

This bridge in Bassano del grappa is one of my favorite bridges in Italy. I heard it was built by shipmakers thus the shape of the roof that resembles the bottom of a ship. Every year there is a small parade by the Alpine military to celebrate the bridge.

Easy to find during a stroll through the old town. Unfortunately it was closed for repairs during our visit, and crossing on foot was also not allowed - a pity!

Do you know when the current restoration work will be completed on the bridge? (We are visiting in September this year.)
Written May 27, 2017
The works are still ongoing (end of August) and are far from being over. But the bridgr is still well worth the detour as the whole historicakl center of Bassano

Well, the restoration was planned to be finished before the high season, however, who knows. Anyway , it worth a detour, and the bridge is open for pedestrians . Enjoy it.
