About
Do you know that just few steps form Piazza Conte Rosso, a cannonball from XVII century got stuck into a wall of one of the old buildings? That above a stone column of one of the most precious houses, a cheeky child is pulling faces to the passers-by? That in the prisons of its castle the rebel prince Amedeo d'Acaja of the house of Savoy was confined, and that his spirit is said to still wander in the mists of the lake where he drowned? Park your car in the areas indicated on the map, and set out to find those pecultiarities: you will be surprised by the beauty of the old town, with his heart in Piazza Conte Rosso and in the ruins of the castle above. The information boards along the way will familiarize you with Avigliana's history, its old places, beautiful churches, the Clock Tower, the ancient town gates. Decide for yourself where you wish to start the tour indicated on the map: whether you are arriving by train or are you coming from the lakes. After that, take your time to stroll the narrow alleys: walk slowly and discover ist hidden beauty!

one of the largest cities of the middle ages
Aug 2019
To imagine that this village was one of the biggest towns in the middle ages is just amazing. It is really small and roads are steep. The town itself is wonderful though and offers nice restaurants and terraces. Absolutely a must-see for history-buffs..

A lovely little town
Nov 2018 • Couples
We visited Avigliana with the intention of going up to the Sacre Di San Michele, but alas I had neglected to see the bit about the shuttle bus not running after November 1st.
Not wanting to waste our time there we chose to wander from the station through the streets up along to the castle.
The old town is lovely, cobbled streets, the smell of burning log fires and the very noticeable sound of almost silence as you make your way along.
You could almost be fooled in thinking noone lived there it's that peaceful.

The route up to the castle is relatively steep but not difficult terrain for the unfit.
The views from there are definitely a reward for your efforts. It overlooks the whole valley, with tantalising views of the Sacre Di San Michele and Alps beyond.

At a short half hour train ride from Porta Nuova it's well worth half a day to get out the city.

Unspoiled medieval town
Oct 2017 • Couples
A lovely walk along cobbled streets to the old part of the town. The 13th century church of San Giovanni is worth a look inside. The clock tower is very beautiful and there is an interesting war memorial. Around the back of the piazza, there is an area to sit and admire views over the town.

Typical Italian hill-top village centre

I enjoyed the look and feel of the place and would have liked to sample one or more of its eating establishments. Other commitments meant that I could only look. I particularly liked the portico-ed side of the main square.

Beautiful old town
Dec 2016 • Family
I'm so glad we got the chance to explore this old town. It is close to two lakes and the old part of the town is very nice to walk around. If you walk through the old town up to the castle the views are definitely worth the walk.

Well worth a visit
Oct 2016 • Couples
The Centro Storico was not mentioned in any of our guide books, which is surprising as it is a very charming mix of ancient porticoes, crumbling towers, gateways and churches. In many respects, the sort of thing many of us hope to find in Italy. And it's always so much nicer if you stumble across things without much build up.

Unspoilt Medieval Gem
Sep 2016 • Couples
Small characterful and unspoilt town fairly close to Turin. Lots of old cobbled streets, three town gates and two impressive churches, and the ruins of the castle on the hill above the town.

The town does cater for tourists in a low key way, which adds to it's appeal. It has several restaurants and bars, including the delightful Canton Divino - see separate review.

Well worth a couple of hours strolling around.

I came to the Centro Storico of Avigliana regularly, to attend the evening school on ETCHING , run by two fantastic artists, Vinicio Perugia and Kurt Mayer, but returned during the day for Antique Fairs, Exhibitions, Dinners. So enjoyable!

Giardino delle donne
May 2013 • Friends
Lovely old town, we were there for a wedding. It should have been out in the open in giardino delle donne, but rain tried to put a dampers on the day. But in an old centre like this, even indoors the day was great.
