Avigliana's castle

About
It was probably built by the Marquesses Arduinici of Turin (it was probably Arduino the Hairless who built the first settlement of "Castrum Avilianae") on the top of Mount Pezzulano at the beginning of the XIth century. This castle was a seat for the royal court and as such it was used by the Counts of Savoy at least from 1137. In the XIIth century Emperor Frederick (Redbeard) destroyed the castle and burnt the town and his son Henry VI brought new destructions at the end of the same century. Thomas of Savoy rebuilt the castle in 1189 and since then it became the residence of an important lord of the Count of Savoy. In 1691, after conquering it, the French Marshal Catinat got it definitively demolished, leaving the remains we see nowadays.

The ruins of the castle aren't all that impressive So don't make the climb if you expect a lot from it. However the view over the lakes and mountains is magnificent... so maybe do go

Good morning
We thank you for your review and we remind that our castle had a long and very troubled history told in the different guided tours organized during the year.We hope next time you will visit Avigliana you could have time to take part of one of them to discover history and to see our Castle from a different point of view, of course the view over lakes and mountains is always different but wonderful in the 4 seasons
We hope to see you soon againin Avigliana, the medieval town with the green heart

The ascent through the borgo antico is more enjoyable than the climb to the castle ruins. However, going all the way up to the castle is worth it for the views of the surrounding countryside. The ruins, themselves, are nothing special. Very little remains of the castle but you can imagine how strong it must have been as a fortress.

On teh topo of the Avigliana hill there are the Avigliana Castle ruins. A beautiful view but a little exploited and badly kept monument.
A typical mismanagement of a resource

You could evaluate the site much better with many initiatives. On the other hand, like the country... the administration seems to me to be at large
