An aesthetically embarrassing monument
Aug 2019
Today surely an arch of triumph built a hill placed in a dominant position in a prized territory for the natural environment would certainly not have been approved by any Superintendency.
Here they wanted to collect the bodies of over 50,000 poor infantry (mainly Italian and Austrian) of which over half without a name to honor them, but here the intent of human pity stops. It cannot be ignored that this happened at the time (late thirties) when fascism was preparing hundreds of thousands of young Italians to suffer a similar sort in Africa, Yugoslavia, Greece, Russia.
A greater care for the small internal museum that does not respect any modern museographic criteria could make the visit more satisfying

Very solemn location

When my son and daughter-in-law brought us here, I was expecting an architectural monument. Instead, I soon realized upon entering that this was an Italian site on par with Arlington National Cemetery or Punchbowl Cemetery in Oahu, Hawaii.

The climb uphill is rewarded by the lovely alpine scenery. The walk downhill when leaving is a breeze after you make it to the Memorial.

A very humbling experience. It was surreal walking through the whole centre and reading the names of all the lost soldiers. The centre is very informative and well worth a visit if you ever find yourself in Northern Italy

Fitting tribute

Impressive grand structure which dominates the skyline and is a fitting tribute to the fallen from WW1.
Certainly worth a visit if in the area to pay your respects to those entombed inside.

Beautiful monument. Not suitable for small children. Dress appropriately. We thought it was worth the visit.

My family and I visited the area while exploring my grandfather's war time past. This was a beautiful and very moving monument. Worth a visit and the surrounding area was beautiful. However, the hours are strange and no one was there when we visited.

Well done, worth your time, I took pictures and interpreted some of the Italian later.

Sobering reminder of all the lives lost and the downfall of the Austrian/Hungarian empire. Check opening hours. Nice bar/caffe' at bottom of stairs.

the downside is that they close for lunch - can you figure that out? While you are in the middle of a very moving visit you get sent out because they need "to have lunch". Unbelievable!!!
