The church is beautiful and ancient, but the centerpiece is the beautifully restored array of paintings by Vasari and other important painters of the era. The ceiling of the dome is by the creator of the trompe d'oil effect, Padre Pozzo. Stand on the marker by the altar and look up...it's a stunner.

The abbey was built in the 12th century for the Benedictine order. It was completely refurbished in the 16th century by design of Giorgio Vasari. It took almost a hundred years to finish the work with the construction of the bell-tower in 1650. There are some impressive paintings in the interior and the cupola was decorated by Andrea Pozzo, the Baroque painter.

It's not a big one but is an interesting corner of historical place.
