The idea of embellishing and decorating the low wall that still surrounds the public garden and the Townhall building was of the owner of opposite Caffè Roma, Mario Berrino, and it was welcome also by the American writer Ernest Hemingway, a regular frequenter of the café.
Not having a specific authorization from the Municipality of Alassio, the first three ceramic tiles - made by the local ceramist Pacetti and with the signatures of Hemingway, the italian musicians Quartetto Cetra and the guitarist Cosimo Di Ceglie - were placed almost secretly, at night, in 1953 .
The next day there was no disciplinary or removal action by the Police and Municipality of Alassio and this convinced the smart, marketing genius Mario Berrino to continue his work with the addition, day after day, of similar and irregular colored tiles.
Initially those tiles showed only the signatures of some illustrious customers of the Caffè Roma.
Over the years, with the popularity of this decorated wall, many more tiles by numerous personalities from cinema, television, fashion, entertainment and sport were added.
The bronze statue of the two Lovers, placed above the wall, is the work of the sculptor Eros Pellini.
If you are in Alassio, have a nice, sentimental stroll along the Muretto: it is worth it.

In 1953 the owner of a coffee shop in front this wall decided with friends and supported by Ernest Hemingway , to install tiles with love decorations. Since then many others tiles, statues and hundreds of love phrases and aphorism. Picturesque

Neat concept. Interesting to read through - although a lot are in Italian. You'll find a few familiar names.

A fun thing to see, but quite average. This Wall is made up of tiles with the signatures of famous people. But nothing like "walk of fame" in Hollywood. We didn't find any signatures of celebraties we knew, except for Ernest Hemmingway.

This Wall is made up of tiles with the signatures of famous people. There is also a wall of tiles with photos of dogs nearby. The dogs are all named so I presume they were people's pets. I preferred this wall to the famous people.

. . . to the history of Alassio. If you're Italian, it will make more sense but even we could appreciate the range of 'named' tiles cemented into the wall.

A really beautiful wall of pottery plaques and statues. The wall has been there since the 1960s so really interesting.
Only down point is this padlock phase that seems to be tsking over tourist sites as they ruin your photos

We had coffee opposite the Muretto and after we wandered down the wall look at the names and sometimes hand prints of great writers and actors. It's a great way to have a romp through time. It is unusual and worth seeing. Whitebeard83
