A beautiful beach where amazing marine conservation work takes place.
This is the second time we have visited 'Lara Beach (Bay)' in Western Cyprus. Both times in late August, once in 2014 and the second time in 2020. Lara Beach is quite difficult to get to as there is no 'road' to it, just a few miles of rugged dirt track. So I strongly recommend having at the least a sturdy All-WD or a 4WD vehicle to avoid getting stuck or damaging a more fragile car. We actually went here in Aug 2020 on a rented off-road buggy which was great fun. When you reach the beach there is a small car park area and then there are some uneven steps that go down to the beach. Again this climb is only for the able bodied and those with sensible shoes. Lara Beach is famous for the 'Turtle Conservation' that takes place here and you will see sea turtle nests protected by metal cages on the beach. There is also a shelter here that contains lots of images and information on the turtle conservation work that takes place here. We were very lucky on our visit to witness the Turtle Conservation Staff doing a controlled release of baby Green Turtle hatch-lings into the sea. It was an awesome experience. The beach is sandy and the water is quite shallow with a flat seabed and so it is safe and perfect for swimming. There are no facilities at the beach like toilets, kiosks or cafe's and so do go prepared. Worth a visit but only if you have the right vehicle to access it and only if you respect the environmental work that takes place at this special beach.

An adventure to get too, but that's what makes it fun. Better than a rip off boat trip
We were recommended to come to Lara Bay Beach by a friend. If you are a nervous driver you might want to avoid it, but for us the journey was part of the attraction. We had hired a clapped out old Jimney 4x4 which did us proud on the twists and turns, bits are rocky, bits are sandy and its definitely very very bumpy. Once you arrive at Lara Beach parking is sporadic, in a "dump your car anywhere" kind of a way. There is very little shade, but that was not a problem for the Jimney. There are no shops here so make sure you take supplies with you. What there is, is lots of golden sand which is dotted with metal baskets, which sit on top of the turtle nests to avoid hapless tourists from inadvertently sitting on them. Because of the nests, umbrellas and sun shades are banned for most of the year, making this beach quite exposed so make sure you have plenty of sunscreen as there is no shade. We saw a number of tourist boats drift into the bay as we lounged on the sand, I know where I would prefer to be and at a fraction of the cost. Avoid the tourist trap boats and adventure to the beach itself.

    Good if you are nearby
We drove from sentido Cypria bay hotel in paphos as a family of two adults and a 3 year old (at the time, now he’s 4 ) Oh my goodness the drive :(((((( the journey wouldn’t be so long, but it’s literally on uneven broken ground :-( we were driving at 5 mph!! And just hitting pot holes!! Took us an 1hour 20 min to get there. It was blazing hot, couldn’t put our feet on the ground. No deck chairs, absolutely nothing. The beach was nice and the water was okay, but definitely wasn’t worth the journey we went through!! We literally stayed ten minutes because we were with a child and couldn’t bear the heat as adults. Maybe it would’ve been a different experience if we travelled ten minutes, or if we had all the gear necessary to spend time there. But definitely not worth over an hour to travel for - that’s my opinion, others might disagree Thanks

    Peaceful beach in beautiful surroundings
After a rather long and slow drive down a very bumpy dirt road we reached Lara beach. The first thing you notice is just how peaceful it is, the water is beautiful and clean and the beach itself, though may not be the best beach I'm Cyprus, is still very nice. It's a beautiful experience and being able to educate our little one on the conservation of turtles just added to a wonderful experience, we watched the amazing sunset before setting back on the ling bumpy road. It's worth a visit if you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle and arent afraid to venture off the beaten track.

One of the best beaches in Paphos
It was the last beach visited by us in Paphos. The road is a little difficult if you go with a smal car but totally worth it. We've been there in July and there were not tourists at all. Just the sound of the waves, the sunset and the turtle nests. Really clean and warm water, with a long beach. We stayed to watch the sunset and weren't dissapointed.

Don’t go out of your way…
We stopped at Lara Beach as part of a larger excursion. While it was much needed to stop there so we could jump into the sea and cool down after hiking, the beach itself is not something I would go out of the way for. It is known for the Turtle Conservation which is amazing as there are hundreds of turtle nests on the beach that are protected. The problem is people do not follow rules and use sunscreen (distracts the turtles smell when they are trying to swim back to their nests) and umbrellas (can smash eggs when going into the sand). Wish the rules were stricter! Nice to see if you are in the area but not worth going out of your way or spending too much time.

Unique experience. You can only come here in a long dirt road. Beautiful, sandy, natural beach with big waves. There are protected turtle nests all around the beach. One of the best beaches in Cyprus.

    2WD is fine!
Great Sandy beach. Water crystal clear on a calm day and a flat shallow sandy bottom as supposed to pebbles or rocks like many of the beaches on the Akamas Peninsular. If it’s good enough for the turtles....... NOTE: it’s totally fine to drive in a small 2wd car. I get sick of these people who panic and leave reviews saying you need a 4WD. You DONT! (Unless it was raining and therefore muddy which is v rare!) Just take it easy. It’s bumpy, so weave around and avoid any big potholes. I’ve done this journey multiple times over 10 years (road condition always similar)

Lara beach doable with normal car
Great beach and also very doable with normal car. We had a super small 1.0 Kia picanto and even that worked out! Just go very slow. We saw around 15 normal (non 4x4) cars at the parking lot. Just be aware that you won’t see turtles during the day, they hatch at night.

    wild and inaccessible
A beautiful place, but forgotten by God ... It is difficult to get here and you have to reckon with a completely dirty car, which resembles an off road ... However, this is what makes it beautiful ... admission here ... But the beach itself is nice.

Lara Beach is approximately 5km from the Avakas Gorge and the terrain is rough. It is accessible with an ordinary car if you drive slowly and carefully, but a 4x4 would certainly be better. When we arrived, we firstly looked at the information in the hut about the turtles; this beach is where two breeds of turtle lay their eggs and the babies are monitored and counted. I was told that this beach is the one place on the Mediterranean where the turtle population is increasing. We watched nests which were "overdue" being carefully opened and baby turtles being released into the sea. Later we experienced one swimming right by us, which was amazing.

We also experienced a whole bunch of people who had been hit with the stupid stick and had erected umbrellas, despite the warnings everywhere that these are prohibited. Irene E, above, actually suggests taking one with you. DON'T. They are forbidden, and you should respect the fact that this beach belongs to the turtles first and foremost.

The sea is beautiful and the beach is sandy. I have no idea what the people who refer to stones are talking about. There are some big waves, but that just makes for an exciting swim. I saw no pollution or litter in the sea.

Lara Beach is well worth the trip, but do respect the environment and the turtles if you go. Leave your umbrellas behind... you don't want to inadvertently spear a baby turtle, do you?

Visited specific beach for first time previous weekend.
Beach is hidden in Akamas area (off road around 15 minutes) from the main road of Agiou Georgiou.
Place is not organized, no restaurants/bars, not sunbeds! You just lay in the sand and enjoy the view.
Beach is full of turtles nest and if you are lucky you may see some new born turtles (we were not lucky).
There is also a small kiosk/museum with photos of turtles burn in specific beach. Water is very clean in specific beach but with many swell even if there is no wind.
It’s really a very nice experience visiting Lara Beach

Hard to get to - we stopped off for an hour while renting a quad bike. Lovely sandy beach not overrun with people probably because its a bit isolated. Had a great swim and relaxed on the beach. Hiked back a few days later because it was one of the nicest quietest beaches we encountered on our visit.
