A Car Enthusiast's Heaven!
Jun 2019 • Couples
Certainly off the beaten track and easiest accessed by car, it is absolutely worth the trouble. It must be one of the best collections of antique cars, motorcycles, bicycles and public transportation in the world. It also includes some "one-off" unique automobiles. As other reviewers have said, a must see is one of Hitler's Mercedes, certainly a very impressive automobile. Even my wife was enthusiastic and impressed with the exhibits.

Vintage cars!
Dec 2018 • Couples
Absolutely amazed by this museum. Was taken here by my father in law and my other half for an afternoon and the place is fantastic.Got to see amazing vintage cars and motorcycles in a huge period building. The museum houses some historical cars from the two world wars driven and used by leaders of countries! You can get very close to the cars and motorcycles on display. It is about 10Kms from Lyon Central,so you need a car to get there.Highly recommended if you are into cars and history.👍

A well kept secret

This Museum is in the grounds of a Chateau set into high ground overlooking the River Saone. The collection was started by Henri Malartre but, after his death, his widow left it to the City of Lyon.

The Chateau itself holds a collection of early cars, bicycles and motorbikes in rooms on the different floors and there are some rare examples. You then exit the Chateau and walk across the grounds to the large hangar where the bulk of the collection is held.

In here are more cars and motorbikes in the first big area. You then walk into another large area which includes examples of Public Transport from the City of Lyon and its surrounds.

I visited in November, on my own but I can imagine families visiting and having a picnic in the grounds midway round the visit.

I only found out about the Museum by accident but it was well worth the visit.

Great Find

You will need a car to get here, and it’s about 50 minutes from Lyon.

It’s a small museum housed in a lovely castle. Also has motorbikes.

The car collection includes the official ceremonial vehicle of Adolf Hitler! That is worth seeing, and how it survived is beyond me!

If you like cars, then a ‘Must See’. There are two sections to the place. The castle and another warehouse where all the larger vehicles are.

It is really worth it

If you are visiting Lyon, you should not miss this one. It requires a little bit of drive, but it is worth it. You will see a lot of first cars or bikes including a car of Hitler.

2/05/17 visit to the most amazing car museum I have ever seen
May 2017 • Couples
The Henri Malartre auto museum is contained in a small castle in a Lyon suburb. The cars & motor bikes plus some exhibits are ancient but in excellent condition. The castle is very comfortable to move around in & the presentation & memorabilia are amazing.
One question you will ask yourself is "how did they get the cars in here" & "I did not know that Lyon had so many car manufacturers in the very early 1900's"
They have Tour De France winner cycles, France's first electric car, Pope-mobile, early racing cars,Hitlers car, many ancient motor bikes, fascinating miniature ancient autos & general interesting items
My recommendation is do not miss it if you are in Lyon

The birth of motoring...
Jan 2016
A remarkable museum about 12 km north of the city on the 40 bus route, or by car.
The climb is fairly steep from the bus stop - about 600m on the map, but with a fair climb involved.
The exhibition is housed partly in the chateau proper, over 3/4 floors - no lift - and includes some very rare and some actually unique early motor cars, and also motorcycles and bicycles.
The remaining, and larger, part of the exhibition is housed across the park, about 500m away in a large hangar, and includes some beautiful and rare period vehicles - including Hitler's personal armoured Mercedes-Benz - one of the ones - I presume he had several - you see in the news reels!.
The quality of the exhibits is very good.
The collection was the inspiration for the now highly collectible toys/models in the RAMI by JMK range, produced by piecework in the 1950's and 60's in the local area. (The 'M' in RAMI is Henri Malatre, founder of the collection.)

We were well off season, and had the place to ourselves, but I would suggest that they could do better with the signage in the park, and should include a site map on the website... I found Part II only because I knew there was more in the collection than I had seen, and went looking...
Refreshments would be welcome too,
But in spite of the shortcomings, and as an aficionado of these period vehicles, I wouldn't have missed it!

Just take the car!

Mansion transformed into a museum about everything that moves you

The museum, located on top of the hill, overlooking the Saone valley gathers automobiles, motorbikes and other moving vehicles from the late 19th century until today. A lot of unique pieces worth a look

Neglected Car Museum in Lyon
Sep 2015 • Couples
A wonderful collection of cars housed in a neglected chateau. It is accessible by bus but not signposted and the Tourist Office in Lyon do not mention - let alone advertise it. Most of the exhibits are French, but by no means all and many are unique. there is also a fine collection of motor bikes. Well worth a visit for anyone interested in 20th century transport but an alarming example of official neglect.
