We arrived in Muscat on a cruise ship - unfortunately on a Friday, which meant a lot of places were either closed or closing for the afternoon. The museum was small but ok. The souk was very touristy. The Grand Mosque although impressive was closed...More

Yes the city centre is accessible but I would recommend a taxi to get to at least one of your preferred places of interest and then walking aound, the only thing holding you back might be the temperature as it gets very hot... More

Need expert opinion on our 4 days itineraries with daughter (4 Replies)
Dear Oman experts and fellow travelers, we're family of 3 and planning to visit Oman on Dec 25 to 28 and stay at Centara Muscat, we have planned 4 days itineraries and need your opinion to revise/add it : Day 1 - Mon, 25 Dec Rent a car and drive to Nizwa all the way to Jebel Shams and go back to Muscat. Is this doable in one day without feel being too hurry ? And I wonder if 4WD is really required or saloon car will do just fine ? I also have contacted a tour operator and need to...More

For Jebel Shams a 4x4 is recommended as there is a 10 kilometers unsurfaced stretch. Some have done it in a saloon car, but also have a look if the insurance will cover the off-road part. The Royal Opera House can also be visited on a small guided tour (every morning I think, have a look at their website). There is a small upmarket mall attached to it.

8 hour layover in Muscat between 06:25AM and 2:45pm (8 Replies)
Hi all, As I have an 8 hour layover in Muscat between 06:25AM and 2:45pm I’m looking at leaving the airport to the explore Muscat. I have the below questions: Is it worth leaving the airport at all? On a European passport do I need a visa to leave the airport? What would be the most feasible attractions to visit which I could experience without missing my second flight? How far is the airport from Muscat city centre? I look forward to responses. Regards, Alex

Here’s the article:   Sightseeing: Visit the impressive sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a religious Landmark of Muscat showcasing the splendor of unique Islamic architecture. A trip to Muscat is not complete without visiting the Al Alam Palace flanked by the 16th Century Portuguese forts of Mirani and Jalali.   Outdoor Adventures: Snorkel...More
