… an absolute highlight ! It’s the scale of this place that impresses. And central to this is arguably the Chandelier that dominates the main prayer room - 14m x 8m of Swarovski crystal weighing 8 tonnes ! The ‘estate’ beyond is reminiscent of the Taj Mahal - imposing & memorable for it’s structures. Beyond the Mosque, the Opera House, the fish market and the Mutrah Souk are all worthy inclusions to an educational 4-hour private tour.

Muscat is a difficult city to visit : very decentralized, with wide, long avenues, it goes on and on. It is impossible to reach most attractions on foot ; it is absolutely necessary to move by car. As such, to me, it lacks the charm of most well established cites where you walk all day to get a good understanding of the place.

We stopped here on a cruise excursion that combined a tour of the city center with a stop at the Souq. As an amateur photographer I found the combination of old and new worlds to be interesting subjects. My suggestion: travel light. My DSLR with a zoom lens was a great choice. The city center shots needed speed due to the motion of the bus. The choice of zoom lens made for easy and quick grab shots. As always watch for distracting reflections in bus windows. look ahead to be prepared for opportunities. Ps: we traveled here just before the pandemic hit.

The largest city in Oman, the old part is maniacally neat and clean. Personally I was not impressed, the historic part has its own Souk like many others and outside some shop in my opinion without interest. Everything perfectly in order but devoid of history, mosque and palaces (that of the sultan) are recent constructions that only arouse amazement at the majesty and accuracy as well as the work, the rest are gigantic streets lined with shops, hotels and shopping centers

This is a pretty great mall in Muscat with a wide variety of shops and a great hypermarket and decent food court as well!

For me the Muscat City Centre is the best shopping mall in Oman. With a Carrefour hypermarket and plenty of other shops.

As a world traveler I would say that Muscat is like a small fishing town. Quite low key, though very interesting to visit.
As a person living in Dubai for some years, I would definitely recommend you to visit Muscat/Oman as the weather conditions are enjoyable, no humidity and some fresh air with plenty of cool breezes.
Plenty of green, trees and scenery which makes your mind calm down.
As Muscat is Islamic, you can see and experience an original Arabic heritage. Just go down to visit the Souq and you see it’s more original than the one in Dubai.
Definitely a great place for a getaway.

Natural beauty is one of the reasons that can lead you to Oman, but it's not the only one. Long and exciting history of thousands of years , warm and friendly people, plus a variety of accommodations on the expensive side though, can make your journey to Oman unforgettable. One of the things I did like about Oman, is the low rising buildings that respect the environment. There is a lot of green, something rather unusual for the Arab peninsula and beautiful pristine beaches with blue waters. The waterfront in different cities- Muscat, Sohar,Sur , Salalah and even in small towns is really something you don't see often around the globe. There is a great variety of food offered with seafood being the main attraction for your palate.
Travel around is quite safe and easy in the newly constructed roads or highways but the secondary roads can offer an interesting alternative. Sultanate of Oman is a Muslim country and you have to keep that in mind especially if you travel there during Ramadan period like I did. There is a quite interesting market with traditional Omani products and with interesting antiques but you have to be aware of imported souvenirs made in China. A trip to Salalah in the south is a must and if you do not like driving you can always go there by plane.
Oman is home to a lot of luxurious 5star hotels but you can also find a lot of good quality places to stay by the seaside, in wadis, in the desert or in the mountainous areas.

Tired of sitting in the hotel, I stretched my legs here. It's well laid out, very clean and the staff are very friendly. Plenty of places to eat, mostly fast(ish) food and a good selection f shops. Getting a taxi home is easy. I am sick of the reviews that say "nothing like Dubai" that's because it's not Dubai, it's Oman and has it's own identity. If you want Dubai then go to Dubai.

This is one of the older (but very well maintained) malls in Muscat.
It's got plenty of stores, coffee shops, fast food dining, Vox cinemas (I think the best in Muscat) and some nice restaurants too.

Muscat is one of those places where you will find both UK and US based stores, but you won't really find the best variety in terms of the items or clothes as compared to Dubai. This mall has a lot of international brands, mostly in the mid-range category. So you will find stores ranging from Zara, Max, H&M, Marks and Spencer, Stradivarius, Forever 21, Mango, Next, Bath and Body Works, the Body Shop and others when it comes to shopping and everything from Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Costa Coffee, McDonalds, Pinkberry, Baskin Robbins, KFC, Santinos, Chili's, Nando's, the Gourmet Burger Kitchen and many more when it comes to food. They also have a hypermarket called Carrefour where you get everything from groceries and food to appliances and electronics under one roof. They also have a play area for kids called the Magic Planet.

Note that this mall doesn't have any luxury stores such as Gucci or LV (no place in Muscat so far has those). But it does have a Mont Blanc Store.

If you are staying near the Airport, this mall will not be too far a drive for you, but if you are staying at the Shangri La or the Al Bustan Palace, or any hotel in the Ruwi or Wadi Kabir Area, this mall will be quite a drive for you (1 hour plus). You might then be better off going to the Muscat Grand Mall or Qurum City Centre for a mall experience.
