Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole

Wadi Shab, a fresh water river, waterfall and caving experience, is truly one of the natural wonders of Oman. The easy hike (suitable for children) begins with a short boat ride across the estuary, continues on foot for approx. 5 km, then descends into the cool turquoise waters of the Wadi. A short swim and the waterfall is in sight. Local legend tells us that the Bimmah Sinkhole was formed when an asteroid fell to the earth – truly it is an out-of-this-world experience. Only 600m from the sea, the sinkhole is a refreshing stop to swim and enjoy the salty air of the ocean on the return trip to Muscat.

Jebel Shams, Balcony Walk & Al Hamra Village

Topping just above 3,000m, Jebel Shams (‘Mountain of the Sun’) is the highest peak on the Arabian Peninsula. It is not uncommon to see snow and hail in the winter months, and in the summer months is still prone to inclement weather. Within this environment is what is commonly called Oman ‘Grand Canyon’, a majestic semi-circular canyon, mid-way around the rim of which is the ‘Balcony Walk. Although generally classified as ‘moderate’ in intensity, the drops can be sheer so walkers should be comfortable with heights. On the return trip to Muscat the 400-year old village of Al Hamra offers some glimpses into the traditional village living of years gone by.

The ancient city of Nizwa, once the capital of Oman, boasts a beautifully renovated and restored fort, and the UNESCO world heritage site of Falaj al Daris (an interconnected waterway complex)- still in every day use today.

Golden Highlands is a great company. As I live in Oman, I have first-hand experience of their service. I have participated in trips which Golden Highlands organized for individuals, small groups as well as larger groups. Of course, they know the places that are of interest for tourists, such as cultural highlights, nature, history,... But a unique feature of Golden Highlands is that they have hosted groups of international geologists and therefore are also familiar with the hidden gems of Oman's geology. And if you decide to use their "full package", you can enjoy the delicious food they cook. I can only recommend them.

Geologist from the University of Oslo has established a close collaboration with the Golden Highlands; car rental, trip advice, transport of equipment, etc. As geologist going out in the mountains for field work, we have used these services since 2017 and will keep on in the coming years. Golden Highlands offers a unique combination of good, friendly dialog and very reliable services.

Golden Highlands organized for us (three geologists) a field trip to a remote area within Oman. Due to some unforseen difficulties we had to change plans on a short notice. Golden Highlands reacted very flexibile and was really helpfull. I therefore highly recommend them not only but especially for trips to areas that are off the beaten track.

Our guides have been very friendly and did their best to make our trip a special experience. Every evening they cooked us some delicious food (also vegetarian). They also provided a tasty breakfast for us, as well as a lunchbox. They organized everything quite well and the campsides were always perfect. It was also possible to give the two guides some postcards and they delivered it for us. While sitting around the campfire, we had the pleasure to listen to some traditional music. We also received a little present, which is also really kind of them. All in all, it was a great trip and a good experience travelling with Golden Highlands.
