Best little Chateau in St. Emilion
Jun 2017 • Couples
We visited this chateau via bicycle upon the recommendation of a wine cooperative employee in St. Emilion. Helpful hint: ask the locals where to go for food and wine, they will never lead you astray.

Chateau Trapaud is an excellent little chateau producing some marvelous wine, with a lovely family keeping its traditions alive. When we arrived, at first we were greeted by a lazy farm dog that only wanted tummy rubs (we of course obliged him), but soon enough we were greeted by ''Madame Trapaud'', who gave us a quick tour of the facilities, as well as a brief history of how her husband's family acquired the chateau. Currently, her daughter, a brilliant oenologist, is revitalizing the family business with her winecrafting.

The vineyard grounds are very quiet, not necessarily a lot of amazing architecture, but has a very authentic air to it, with lovely views of the surrounding hills. The aforementioned farm dog was a definite highlight.

After the tour, we proceeded to a tasting room to sample some wine. First of all, the wine is EXCELLENT; it is obvious that this chateau is quietly producing some great vintages, and at no great expense to the wallet. We bought a bottle and enjoyed it with some homemade pasta the following evening.

Our hostess very kindly re-filled our glasses after our tasting was over, probably because we were engrossed in such interesting conversation on wine, the history of the region, etc.

The tour was in French, and any visitor to the region should probably know some French already.

This was not a visit filled with gimmicks or busloads of middle-aged British people looking to get drunk, it was simple, quietly elegant, a little rustic, and highly enjoyable for the spirit. Overall, this was our favorite chateau visit in St. Emilion, with the best wine we had as well. Highly recommended, and bring a picnic lunch to go with the bottle of wine you purchase.
