A wasted opportunity?
Nov 2019
Whether or not this unused viaduct has historical or architectural merit is open to a debate that could extend to whether or not it adds beauty to the landscape. I don’t propose entering such debate and my main issue is whether the local council or the Ministries for health and tourism have given proper thought as to what benefit the structure could bring.

Where I live in North Yorkshire, redundant railway viaducts have been brought into modern use as part of local walking and cycling trails, and it wouldn’t take much imagination to something similar here, particularly when you consider that this is a most popular tourist area.

The coastal walk Lower Largo

A beautiful walk unfortunately not over the viaduct but the wee village is one of the most beautiful in UK . The path itself is a magical journey past some spectacular country side. An easy walk from Lower Largo takes you to Elie with golden beaches and water sports xx

Largo landmark

Dominates the harbour in the village of Lower Largo. Sadly no longer in use due Dr Beeching recommending closure of the coastal line in the sixties. The viaduct can be reached through a car park and from a path from the Main Street. The views are excellent. No access is permitted. Adjacent to a private house.

Splendid viaduct
Apr 2018 • Couples
Very distinctive and substantial viaduct with splendid views of the sea and Edinburgh coastline. The viaduct is no longer in use and is sealed off by railings. It is in a good state of repair and remains as a striking feature in the town or Lower Largo.

Scenic location

Whilst having a walk around the village of Lower Largo yesterday, we took a close look at the old railway viaduct.
This single track viaduct opened in 1857 and formed part of the NBR (North British Railway) route to St Andrews. It was closed to all rail traffic in 1966. However, the viaduct remains a striking piece of architecture, dominating the view from the harbour. It comprises four 60 foot arches and was built entirely from stone.
As of this time the viaduct is closed off, and it is not possible to walk across it. Efforts to restore the structure to public use as part of a foot and cycle path have so far come to nothing which is a shame really.
