The ancient village is not much to look at as you can’t make much sense of the various stones. However, the burial chamber higher up the slope is well presented and has lovely views towards Tresco. A suitable focal point for a half day walk from Hugh Town which you could combine with a visit to the cafe Juliet’s Garden.

finding it by accident was the best part really. it's further along the coastal path from Juliet's Garden. near the entrance to Juliet's was a sign showing the route to it. at first you might think not much to see. but there are illustrations on a board of how the village looked and it was easy to imagine the houses. just a calm place with a true feeling of connecting with the past. talked to people there who were taking a nostalgic visit. a lady who holidayed there many time on probably her last trip. everyone on Scilly is friendly and has time to talk.

Great part of the island to walk around and a welcome historical diversion. A couple of boards give a bit of background to peruse before you head off again and leave the rabbits to scamper back.
One other point, St Mary's: you could do with marking your paths. They're not at all clear and you can end up on private roads or taking unintended detours.

Having walked a coastal path on a exceptionally hot afternoon ,we found the Ban'ts Carn Burial.. It was larger than we expected covering most of the area of a hill. There was an information board that was helpful..
Worth a visit if you are in to ancient history.

The Scilly Islands have plenty of Neolithic and Bronze Age burial carns and archaeological sites of interest, and Bant's Carn was a fascinating example of these places. Be sure also to visit the Innisdgen Tombs a short walk away.

We've visited Bants Carn many times and are always struck by how well preserved it is. It's almost as if the people have not been gone long. You can stroll among the houses and in and out of the rooms, up the alleys between the houses and let your mind wander.
A great place to visit and perhaps taking the kids for a picnic.
Maybe not ideal for disabled people as it involves quite a steep slope down to it.
Well worth a visit but one word of warning, the cafe shut 3500 years ago!!

One of the better ancient sites I have ever visited in the UK & in a dramatic setting. To some people, just a load of old stones. But doesn't take a lot of imagination to get a whole bigger picture.

This is a brilliant place to sit by a big ancient rock and stare off into the distance. Everyone will think you are an intelligent, noble dog (even if you are just thinking about snacks.) The sea breeze feels great in your ears and there are lots of interesting sniffs.
I went inside the burial chamber and it wasn't scary at all. No ghosts.
I wouldn't advise any dog to try and sit on top of it because there are big gaps between the stones.
The walk back to town is really fab, along a windy soft path through heathland. Make sure your owners are wearing decent shoes.

In good weather and with the bluebells out, this was a wonderful spot to visit and an unusual opportunity to get a feel for ancient living arrangements! Good information boards. Free and open to all. We came the long way round, caught the bus from Hugh Town to Watermill, walked to the coast - down a pretty lane - and walked round to the Innisidgen Burial Chambers, which are excellently preserved. We then proceeded around the top of the Island with glorious views of the outer islands, to the ancient village, and then walked on to a very well-deserved lunch at Juliet's Garden. Lovely full morning walk, helped by the 40p map from the Tourist Information in Hugh Town which shows footpaths.
