Stunning and largely untouched ... a historical gem
Nov 2017 • Solo
This church is in a quiet location and a short walk up a hill from the village. On most walls are a multitude of old plaques, some for folk who died as far back as 1747. The floor is part tiled and part brick and did not suffer a makeover by the Victorians. Most windows are of coloured glass so it is a little dark inside.
There are three columns of wooden pews and the church is in two similar parts parted by five large stone arches. There are two altars, one each at the head of the church and behind them thin, coloured glass windows. The underside of the roof is of wood and wooden roof beams are visible.
The most impressive item is the 13th century painting of St Francis of Assisi which is close to a window and it is the only example of an image of him painted in the U.K. in this century.
A wonderful church to visit an there is a smart information booklet about it available at one pound fifty pence.

Lovely feeling inside, not overly modernised or bland.

Worth a pause.

On a hot day it was great to cool down and feel the cares of the world dissolve,

Lovely Old Church
Sep 2016 • Family
We thoroughly enjoyed our short visit to the Church in Doddington Place a short distance from the gorgeous gardens reviewed by others on this site. The church has a lovely ambience and features a list of vicars on the wall from 1325 to the present day. Of particular interest are the stunning 13th Century wall paintings of St Francis of Assisi and delightful stain glass windows. Certainly worth a short visit to take in some tranquility and spiritual nourishment!

Amazing frescoes

We stayed opposite the church so had a chance to visit before Sunday service. Well worth doing so as the frescoes are amazing, given their age the colours remain visible.

The real name of this church is The Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist and is allegedly in the Domesday Book
