Heed the warnings about the weather
Jul 2019 • Family
We arrived at Val d’Ese after being a little nervous about the complete lack of signage until you are literally *right there*. The drive up was reasonably treacherous. It is on a two lane road but very little barriers with a drop down that made my stomach turn if I looked out the window. There are few other cars on this road, as it ENDS at the ski station. Despite there being no one else there at all, the restaurant seemed to be open and someone came out to warn us of an impending storm. We did about an hour into the hike and then returned, as we could see the storm clouds coming in amazingly quickly. The scenery is beautiful and we were really disappointed that we couldn’t do the round trip. Although it was mid-July, you’ll need a jacket. It was surprisingly chilly, as the start altitude is 1600m. I’d go back for a second try if possible.

Beautiful hike

A mildly strenuous hike to a gorgeous location! Well worth it.
There is a source of potable water near the top and, if you are lucky, the shepherd will be there and you may be able to buy cheese.
Make sure you get information about weather in the mountains before you go. A storm can come fast and make the conditions treacherous.

Do not hesitate to walk to the pozzi's. For fit people no problem.Start by the ski lift: at the beginning a bit steep.

Great day hike!

Our hotel host recommended a hike to Il Pozzi, so we headed there one morning. From the town of Bastelica, it's about a 14km drive to the parking area, shared with a ski resort. Expect a two-lane mountain road and wonderful views, a few pigs in the road, etc on the way there. In other words, take your time.

So what are Il Pozzi? The photos shown are accurate--they're kind of like pools formed by the spring melt. These aren't pools you can swim in. You can picnic next to them. It's just a very cool landscape in the middle of (kind of) nowhere.

The trailhead will not be marked as distinctly as a trailhead might be marked in the US, but if you park and then go past the ski lifts, bearing slightly to the right, you will be on your way. The hike may be a little bit challenging because of the ups and downs. On average, elevation is probably around 1600m. Poles will help but are not essential. I wouldn't take young children because there are some steep (but short) sections where you will have to be careful about your footing. Depending on the time of year, you may cross a few streams and go through a little snow. Many hikers have left cairns, and there will also be yellow trail marks on various rocks and trees.

We were out for about 5.5 hours, which made for a very pleasant day hike. Others can certainly do it faster. We took the same route in to the pozzi and out from the pozzi, but there seem to other ways of making a loop either back to the parking lot or all the way to the town of Bastelica, but you would have to have some form of transportation to make that work. From the pozzi, you have to go over a pass that was described to us as being a segment of the GR20 trail. Trail map recommended if you're considering that.
