I visited Antigua Guatemala. Spa Kawilal was the best of everything
A few weeks ago I went to Antigua Guatemala, everyone is so friendly there and my overall experience was excellent but I am definitely taking my time to write this review about Kawilal Spa because they deserve it. Believe me; I have been to many spas in my life all around the globe but this was something completely different and special.
Going there was a perfect choice and I would only come back just to have a massage and a thermal bath. The thermal water treatment is spirit and body healing. I had a pain in my back for several months but after taking a thermal circuit as they call it, the pain is gone and I am planning my next trip to Antigua Guatemala just to go to the spa again.
Besides the excellent massages and pools they have a delicious restaurant with Guatemalan recipes. The spa is located inside a thermal water complex called Santa Teresita. There you can find everything you need.
The location is great because you can take a bus directly from Antigua Guatemala. Here I found the schedule: http://www.aroundantigua.com/todo/spa-antigua-guatemala.htm

The spa paid for our round trip taxi from Antigua. I got the whole package with coffee-chocolate scrub circuit of baths and massage. Professional treatment. Lunch was good. Only complaint was there was no way to tip the excellent women who give the treatments

I doubt the water comes from the volcanoes as they pretend, but it is a nice place to go spend a day. The free shuttle will pick you up in Antigua in front of the Cathedral at 9 am on Wednesdays (an hour drive). If you take one of the packages, beware that they are disorganized. You have to remind them that you have a massage, or a vapor bath, or a facial, otherwise they'll leave you at the pools and they'll rush at the end to give you what you paid for before the shuttle heads back to Antigua. Very beautiful and clean facilities, experienced massage therapists, good food at the restaurant (the chef who designed the menu is Mario Campollo, the same chef who'll delight you at the Casa Santo Domingo in Antigua).

I saw the brochure for this place with a photo of the pools set against quiet green hills and immediately booked my afternoon there. When I arrived I discovered that the spa is NOT near green hills - it is next to an industrial area with big trucks rolling by every minute - it is quite noisy and not the "escape" they had falsely advertised with doctored photos. It's not a bad spa BUT it was not what I expected and so naturally I was disappointed. Upstairs at the spa there is tranquil music, but just below is the main pool where they play euro-trashy techno pop music so most of the time you can hear the bleed between the 2 music genres and the trucks honking on the road. My back massage would have been ok had I been allowed to take off my thick terry cloth robe (I had a bathing suit underneath) but the massage therapist insisted on giving me a back massage with my thick robe on? Very odd? Sadly, this was not the day I had hoped for. * Worth noting is that their new sister hotel Kawilal next door is LEEDS certified (built in 2013) and is gorgeous and set back from the road. It has a view of the mountains and the rooms are lovely! Skip the spa just go to the hotel for a night!)

The service in kawailal hotel is the worst, the restaurant is the most slow and disapoibting service i had have ever, they took long time to come and pick the order then all of the disapear mos of the people in the restaurant keep reminding the watress about the items ordered pending to be received, the check in is supposed to be at three, without notice they changed it to four and a half, this is the worst experience I have had ever in a hotel I disreecomend this hotel

Kawilal Spa was a lovely surprise. My niece and I tried the thermal bath circuit and massage package, which was extremely reasonable in price (about $30 for both, I think) and a nice, relaxing way to spend the afternoon. The thermal circuit involves soaking in baths at varying temperatures while looking out on a mountain view. The spa's archictecture is also attractive. After our circuit we were given a fruit smoothie and allowed to stay in one of the moderate temperature baths for as long as we liked. We scheduled the massages for the end of the day (although I think they would have been lovely to start with, too.) You were asked to select a massage oil based on its fragrance and health properties. The massages were intense - if you like a gentle massage,I recommend telling your massage therapist before she starts. We also toured the facility, where we saw hydrotherapy saunas with eucalyptus scented steam. If we'd had more time I know we would have tried these! They also have a restaurant that serves healthy fare, and numerous swimming pools that you can used. The staff was extremely helpful, always there the moment we had a question or were ready to move on to the next of our activities. We speak decent Spanish but they were also willing to speak in English, which made everything easy. We'd called in advance and had a staff member pick us up in Antigua for a fee. It was just a lovely and relaxing way to spend a day.

I loved the hotel and the associated restaurant. The architecture of the hotel was unique (built into the hill) and interesting. You get to choose from the menu the included breakfast. Every meal at the hotel was beautifully prepared. I fell in love with their fish ceviche (as opposed to shrimp).
The staff was very accommodating.

I have a disability so the biggest challenge was getting up and down some interestingly designed steps to our hotel room. As long as I took my time with my oxygen tank, I got up and down ok. Otherwise, disabilities were considered in the design and everyone was helpful when possible.

Some of the staff could spend more time learning English. We did not know much Spanish, but we were able to work things through with those who did know some English.

All in all, I would love to go there again.

Very new, boutique hotel with nice rooms. Food very good. The infinity pool and jaccuzi have opening times till 22hour. However, the hotel deal do NOT include the thermal baths circuit of hotel Santa Therisita, only the part with pools. Too crowded, almost like a picnic place, serving food next to the pools.

Hello Nathalie, thank you for your comments! We are very glad you enjoyed our hotel. Regarding the food issue you mention near the pools in Santa Teresita, we have taken action regarding this issue so no food will be allowed near the family pools. We hope to have you stay with us again! Best regards, The Kawilal Hotel Team

I arranged a tour through the Yellow House Hostel in Antigua to do the Pacaya Volcano hike in the morning and spend the afternoon relaxing here in the pools. I really enjoyed the pools. It is relaxing and they have music playing in the background. There are volcanoes in the backdrop. There are 4 pools of varying temperatures. They have fruit smoothies they will serve to you in the pools and a menu from the kitchen you can order from as well. Children are not allowed into the upper sections which adds to the relaxation. There is a castle like structure you can climb and I fell asleep in a lounge chair in one of the upper levels. I would make it a priority to come back here if I am ever fortunate enough to visit Antigua again.
