We had a brief visit here as part of a day tour, that included a tasting at the nearby Audarya winery. The church is from the 12th century, and the nearby olive trees looked that old, too! It is a peaceful area with lovely pastoral scenery. The church wasn't open when we visited but the outside of the building was interesting in itself. A worthwhile stop if you are in the area.

SERDIANA. CHURCH OF S MARIA DI SIBIOLA

Type: church
Qualification: subsidiary
Main designation: Church of Santa Maria di Sibiola
The one dedicated to Santa Maria is a rural church that rises near the town of Serdiana.
The characteristic facade of the building, in Romanesque style, has a simple flat terminal. In it there are two entrances that are surmounted, the left one by a trumpeted single-light window, the right one by a mullioned window. A continuous series of hanging arches on peducci, relates the two corner pilasters and also decorates the sides.
The interior has two naves of different sizes as well as the two semicircular apses visible at the back of the building. The classroom is covered with barrels and presents a partition into bays through the use of round arches.
Structure
The church was built with the use of sandstone ashlar. It has a hall divided asymmetrically into two barrel-vaulted naves and separated by arches. The apses, of different sizes, are externally decorated with arches. The left one also has a splayed single-light window.
Facade
The façade has two portals above which, one on each side, are inserted a single and a mullioned window. The corner pilasters intersect horizontally with a series of arches decorating the top of the entire elevation.
Pre-existing
In ancient times the facade was decorated with majolica tiles of which we still have today, only the sockets that contained them. It was also present to culminate the prospectus, a bell tower of which we have the basic ashlars.

HISTORICAL OUTLINES

XII (whole building well)
The construction of the building, perhaps the work of the Vittorini monks, is to be dated, according to a formal reading of the building by scholars, to the first half of the twelfth century. Attested for the first time in 1215, it appears in 1338 among the possessions of the monks themselves. Regarding the title, the first mention dates back to 1341.
1960 ‐ 1962 (facade restoration)
The façade that can be seen today, is the result of restoration works dating back to the years 1960-1962.
