Mascota was recently designated a Pueblo Magico which is a designation for special and significant tourist towns in Mexico. Mascota is a small, well kept town, with beautiful cobbled streets. The town plaza has a lovely gazebo and garden area perfect for resting and people watching. The lovely church and municipal building are also on the square. There is a coffee shop on 1 corner and an ATM on the other. The region is known for its coffee, cheeses, preserves and Raicilla (basically tequila but not from the designated region). The road from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara goes through Mascota and is a beautiful scenic drive. There are also some nice scenic drives nearby Mascota.

The plaza of Mascota, a newly designated Pueblo Magico is a typical Mexican plaza. It is very charming with the fountains, benches, shops and cafes around it. The church is beautiful, too.
A visit to this little town is a step back in time It is so clean, the air was fresh and the sleepy-looking town has enough to offer visitors for a day or two.

It's the only one plaza in the world with octagonal shape and allows people walk in circles arround it. The kiosk and the clocks of the tower were brought from Paris around 1800.

The place is just average, there is not mucho to see although it is a Magic Town, a denomination given by the tourism office from México to those places that have historical value. It is just ok.

This is the zacalo of Mascota. It is a good place to just sit and watch the locals congregate. The first time that i was here I began to notice that the young people started to walk around the central kiosk, boys in one direction, girls in the other, while their parents sat and watched. The locals told me this was the custumary way for the young people to meet. Obviously weekends are best.

A charming, beautiful, authentic Mexican plaza to sit, enjoy and people watch. Stopped in here for lunch and a cultural experience during a Bike Mexico tour. People are awesome, town is a real gem. Please stop and check it out.

Friday 13th April and we visited Mascota as part of our Vallarta Adventures cultural tour, Pueblos Magicos.

Having visited the "Unfinished Church" from there it was a short walk down the wide cobbled street, with is large grand houses, we were fortunate that our Guide was able to take us inside to the courtyard of one of these wonderful houses.

We soon arrived at the Plaza Principal in Mascota, the central hub of town. One of the most striking buildings there is another church Basilica de la Virgen de los Dolores (reviewed separately). There is a metal bandstand/gazebo in the centre surrounded by the small gardens and stone seating and the dramatic backdrop with the mountains behind.

This is where you will want to sit and relax and just watch how the locals live and interact. You have no choice but become part of the slow paced environment.

Love to sit here and watch people coming and going. Lots of activity to include watching things before sold on the street. It’s a great place to hear the church bells.

If you want to sit for a while amidst lovely flowers, shaped trees and a fountain surrounded by stone frogs, this is the place. Children play on the steps of the gazebo, and on Sunday, vendors sell local art and crafts. The church across the street rings bells to mark the time. It truely is a "plaza típico", a vision of real Mexico.
