I can say we discovered this hidden gem by chance. As a big enthusiast of palaces and royal residences, how couldn’t I fall in love with it? Nowadays it hosts the International Italian Cuisine School, and the palace rooms can be visited only with a guided tour, so we only visited the gardens. They were quite muddy due to the rain, but we enjoyed them. I also managed to scrap a glance of the lavish interiors through the windows!

I just revisited Colorno, just 12 kms north of Parma, it is an amazing place!
This is the heart of the Parmiggiano Reggiano cheese country .
The Palazzo Ducale, built by Napoleon for his wife Maria Luisa is just BEAUTIFUL,
It has amazingly well kept gardens.
Have a espresso on the piazza or ride a bike along the many ciclist circuits to the Po River.
You will eat like in few places in Italy.
Great and simple people will greet you and treat you nicely!

This palace known also as " Palazzo Ducale di Colorno" had a near past as hospital for mental diseases. From that period a very good job of renovation was done to give back to it the ancient beauty. Well done! the park once was bigger (1km wide and 3 km long) now is smaller but really nice. A must see place!

If you love palaces that are rich in furniture, then don't go, as you will be disappointed.
Actually, I found that I didn't miss it here. Known as the Versailles of Parma, the reggia is a pretty building, and the guide was really good. Most of the walls have richly decorated walls, so there is a lot to look at anyway. If you visit Parma it's worth visiting. When you leave, in the sqare on the left there is a café where you can eat the local dish of torta fritta (light fried dough) with an assortments of hams and cheeses that was really good.

In the town centre of Colorno city, close to Parma, you can find this beautiful and very weel kept castle; it is possible to visit it only with a guided tour that costs about 5 euros, value for money I would say because the guide takes you through all the rooms, the astronomic observatory on the top of the building and the church close to it, that can be reachd from the inside af the castle, giving you plenty of expanations. It is a pity that all the tapestries have been taken away from their original locations and are in different parts of the world (museums etc.) but the ceilings, marble decorations on the walls, marble chimneys androom floors are still the original ones and are in a very good condition. The thing I appreciated the most however is the huge garden outside the castle, that is a public park where you can take a walk or just seat and relax, with fountains, fences and very old trees, see the pictures to have an idea of what I am talking about.

I really wanted to like this location, but it currently seems to be in poor repair. I'm hoping what we saw was just due to COVID or summer holidays. The garden did not look well kept. The tunnel was still very pretty.

As we were the only ones on the required tour, our guide was able to do it in English which made it much more interesting. She was great. History of the palace is interesting. The church is lovely and the apartment curious.

I've been to Reggia di Colorno with my girlfriend after lunch. We were amazed because we wouldn't have imagined that there is a place like Versailles in Italy!
The trip is really interesting and the guides are all well-prepared. It's a pity that furniture and paintings have been moved from the former Italian kings to other places like Quirinale in Rome, Palazzo Pitti in Florence and Reggia di Venaria in Turin. But the building is worth - visiting and the garden is impressive. The ticket is 6 € though.

Superbous villa and garden in the heart of this territory. If you don't know the castle and villa of Parma and Piacenza, you have to visit. Torrechiara, Fontanellato and a lot of other gems of Emilia, a place where make happy your eyes and your palate
