One the most unique experiences we had in Slovenia and in general.
We did something unorthodox which is to travel the cave with 3 children ages 4.5, 7 and 9.5. This is a bit risky and not necessarily recommended to everyone because the path can be dangerous, you HAVE to hold the young kids' hands, and they need to be well-behaved through the entire hour.
The other hand holds a flashlight so as an adult you have less stability and can't grab on to things easily.

Still, having said that - it was amazing that we got through it. The children felt like explorers and for us adults it was something we are so glad we didn't miss because for US it was unique. Going into a dark natural cave, with only flashlights, seeing an undergoing river, and riding in a boat in an underwater lake was something you don't normally do like this. The explanations of our guide were interesting and funny, and it was really something everyone will remember.

Note you have to verify the cave is active (it depends on how much water there is in the cave) and whether or not during your stay you need to reserve a place because the tours only leave in extremely specific hours.
There's also hardly any physical signs to the cave until you get very close to it, as far that we could see from where we approached the cave.

Wow wow wow. We just completed the 2 hour tour to the Water Part and Bear Cave. Gasper was the perfect tour guide - a font of knowledge and interpretation of the cave, we learnt so much. We were so impressed by the amount of care and respect that goes into managing the cave, and using science to ensure the cave can remain open to the public, whilst conserving it for future generations. I am sure a lot of hard work has gone into preserving the cave and managing the tricky balance between science, tourism and nature - and I think you have got it spot on. Well done to all involved.

Great pleace. Even when arriving to the meeting point you can already feel that this will be something different from the other caves visitied. Lovely guide who made the tour in Slovenian and English. The group was small and much better. You get the boots and flashlight. It's really dark inside. Basic fitness is needed as there are some small rocks to climbe on or the pontoon. It's sometimes wet, but you have the boots. Recommended to have additional pair of socks.
The only weak point in my opinion is that the tour takes place only at 3 pm in November.

Amazing tour! We took the 4 tour tour and it was perfect. Our tour guide Marco was beyond amazing! I definetly recommend this activity. Book in advacnce because it's only 1000 persons/year that can visit the cave.

Krizna Jama was the highlight of our trip to Slovenia and this tour was certainly one of the best I have taken in my life.

We took the 4 hour tour which we were lucky enough to get seats for only very short prior to the trip. There is a maximum of 4 people a day, they do everything to preserve the cave - no mass tourism!

From what I've experienced I don't think taking the 1 hour tour is worth it. Do everything you can to take the 4 hour tour, you will never forget this.

You take steps into a cave, from there it's dark. You have a headlight and you are equipped with suits and boots (dress warm!) but besides the light on your head there is no artificial light source. You are going deeper and deeper into the cave and every once in a while you switch off your light to see how you are going further and further away from the entrance and it gets darker and darker. So creepy. Don't come here if you have claustrophobia.

The cave is full of small lakes, most of them you need a boat to cross, the boats are waiting there for you. One of the boat has a light underneath which gives you a spectacular view on the ground. The water is the clearest I have seen in my life.

You go deeper and deeper into the cave and it gets more impressive and more beautiful with every meter. There is so many spectacular things that our Guide Gašper showed us that every minute had its own "wow effect". I don't want to talk too much about it to not ruin the surprises.

Gašper was an excellent guide, he knows every centimeter of the cave and makes sure everyone is safe and well informed.

At one point I almost fell into the water while we had to wait at a narrow, slippery point. It's nobody's fault, just make sure you are aware of the dangers every outside activity brings along before bringing expensive camera gear.

Maybe one day I will come back and rent the tour only for myself and my tripod for more impressive pictures. Just seeing this cave a second time would be a dream.

I hope the people will always go on with their preservation of this hundreds of thousands of years old artwork of nature so it will never be as terrible mass-tourismish as the Postojna cave.

This trip was an experience I will remember for the rest of my life.

We have visited a few of the caves in Slovenia now and this wasn't our favorite, but not the worst either! It's a little bit more rustic than the other major tourist caves and that's really nice but the cave system you see on the short tour is not massively impressive - we have been blown away by others.

I will be honest: the dripstone formations at Križna jama are nowhere near the magnitude of those at Postojna, and it doesn't measure against the size and grandeur of Škocjan. If you are only passingly interested in visiting caves, consider braving the tourist crowds to visit them instead, because they really are among the world's best.

In terms of less-touristed caves, there are plenty of options in Slovenia. The selling point for Križna jama is the navigable waterway inside the cave. If taking a boat through underground lakes sounds awesome to you, then do whatever you can to get here! I've been intrigued by underground rivers for most of my life, so this naturally shot to the top of my "things to do in Slovenia" list, and the 4-hour tour did not disappoint!

Because it is dependent on water levels, there is a lot of uncertainty and it does require a lot of reconfirmations ahead of time. We booked and reconfirmed everything via email, and it was smooth and efficient.

The advice for warm clothing is sound, but I suspect they have a lot of people who are ill-prepared for the conditions. I wore a warm wool base layer under jeans and a lightweight fleece, and our guide was concerned about my lack of bulk and convinced me to add another layer. I was a bit too warm and should have trusted myself. If you know what would be comfortable sitting for long periods in 8°C temperatures, that's what you should wear. Plain and simple.

Some areas of the cave (on the 4-hour tour) are slippery or narrow and require a bit of careful footing and attention. It's not particularly strenuous, but you do need good mobility to manage.

I absolutely adore this cave! It is not as impressive as some other caves in Slovenia (Škocjan, Postojna), but the underground water-lake experience cannot be compared to anything else. I went first to the 1.5h trip and then next time to the 4h trip - both times great guides, lots of information (&humor) and just pure, beautiful underground nature. Especially 4h trip is breathtaking and worth the money and the time.

I was bit surprised by the overals, helmet ... but I guess they know best what are they doing :) One would be surprised how many people do not know about this cave - because it is led by true "cave enthusiasts", that care more about the cave than about promotion. Worth seeing!

Ljubljana has a lot of caves to visit, after visit Postonja caves I thought that nothing can surprise me, but this is a different kind of visit, since you get a special boots and lantern to get inside, you walk down into the cave to find out that there is a lake inside with the clearest water you can see, and you can go around into a small boot that has lanterns to see the bottom of this small lake and you can see the geological formation under.
You have to check schedules and dates, the first time I visit I can do the 4 hours visit, the second time only the short one, due to the schedules.

Long great review. Don't want to leave anything out in order to help other travelers. HIGHLY RECOMMEND, but verify transportation. Getting there via public transportation is definitely possible but not as the same as online. We planned our trip from Ljubljana according to their website and Slovenian transportation website. Everything seemed like it would line up time wise including the walk from our last bus stop to the cave. We arrive at bus station in Ljubljana to buy tickets and luckily we did not use the ticket machine. Even though the ticket machine and internet say there is a bus to Zirovnic there is not. This is how we planned. Instead we tried to rent a car, or get a taxi, or take the bus to a diff. location but price and timr would make us miss our tour. SO. We called Krizna Jama and they were AMAZING. They called the other couple and moved up our tour time so we could make a bus back to Ljubljana AND for a very affordable amount arranged for our guide to pick us up at the bus stop and drive us to the cave. SUCH GREAT SERVICE. Igor our guide was helpdul, informative, passionate, patient, and really worked hard. Such an amazing tour and experience for a very reasonable price. How cool to be one of only 1000 a year that gets to visit this unspoiled wonder. Highly recommended, and listen to them about the 3 pairs of socks. Thank you so much Igor and Gasper.
