The church in Chapaize is probably 1,000 years old and every summer there is a music festival. My husband’s choir was asked to sing there so I got to see the church inside and outside where there is a fascinating cemetery.
I would highly recommend going especially to hear a concert.

The Eglise Saint-Martin is definitely worth the trip. Beautiful architecture and recently restored it's a great example of medieval church architecture.

Sunday morning, market day(puce). Beautiful old 11 c Roman church. Heard a local? Couple singing, pretty amazing. It sounded like a whole choir! Simple interior, huge columns.

The Eglise Saint-Martin in Chapaize is one of the oldest Roman churches in Burgundy, with building beginning about 1021-1023. One of its most unique features is its 35 meter high bell tower.

We fell in love with its solidity and its simplicity.

This church and its charming village are part of what seduced me to leave Paris and move to this area permanently. A perfect example of the pared down Romanesque style, in an idyllic setting. I have a particular fondness for the doors too. Definitely worth at least a drive by if you're in the area, but if you have the time to contemplate its simple beauty with a visit, you should do so (and finish off with a meal at one of the fabulous local restaurants!)

The whole village of Chapaize was very picturesque, but it is the church in its center that is a true gem, particularly the outside. I really liked the doors, I had never seen any like that before, and the rose bushes growing along the road in front are an especially nice touch. The inside was a lot plainer than we expected, but apparently that is typical of this period of architecture, which really grew on us over the course of our two-week stay in this lovely area. Worth a detour, especially if you are going on to Tournus or Brancion.
