About
The village of Nuenen is also known as Van Gogh Village, and rightly so. There isn’t a place in the Netherlands where you can tread in the footsteps of this famous painter quite so literally. Here, stories about Van Gogh are still vividly told, his letters are available for reading, and there are no fewer than fourteen locations which have been immortalised by Van Gogh in a picture or a painting. Experiencing Van Gogh’s life in the Netherlands so intensely is not possible anywhere else. “The museum is a gem” In the Vincentre museum you will hear all about Van Gogh and read his own stories about Nuenen, where he lived and worked from 1883 to 1885. Who was he, how did he live, who did he socialise with, and why was he so passionate about Nuenen? It will all become clear during an educational tour with an audio guide in no fewer than eight languages: Dutch, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Chinese. In the village itself, no fewer than 23 locations have a direct link with Van Gogh. Together, they form a walking and cycling route with interactive informational signs in Dutch and English. From The Potato Eaters to The Starry Night The Potato Eaters is based on a scene that Van Gogh saw at the house of a peasant family in Nuenen. It literally comes to life in theatre Het Klooster. The world famous designer Daan Roosegaarde designed, based on Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, the now famous and unique Van Gogh-Roosegaarde cycle path, for which thousands of twinkling stones were incorporated in the asphalt. This cycle path, between Nuenen and the nearby city of Eindhoven, is part of the Van Gogh Cycle Route. Heritage locations in Brabant This cycle route connects the five Van Gogh heritage locations in Brabant, which of course include Nuenen. You won’t get any closer to Van Gogh than this. Or, as one of our enthusiastic guests wrote about Nuenen: “The same view that Van Gogh had!” Come and experience the place in which Van Gogh was inspired by the rural Brabant countryside, easily accessible at no more than ten kilometres away from Eindhoven, city of technology and design.

If you are a fan of Van Gogh, you will love the newly renovated and extended Van Gogh Museum in Nuenen, Netherlands. The museum is located in the town where Van Gogh lived and worked for two years, and it showcases his early paintings and drawings, as well as his personal belongings and letters. The museum has been expanded to include a new exhibition hall, a café, and a shop. The new exhibition hall features interactive displays and multimedia installations that bring Van Gogh's life and work to life. The museum is well worth a visit if you want to immerse yourself in the world of Van Gogh and discover his roots and influences.

I recently paid a visit to the small town of Nuenen. As the publisher of a book on Vincent van Gogh, I am somewhat familiar with the significance of Nuenen in the celebrated yet enigmatic artist's life. I was given a tour of the main sights and the remarkable museum known as the Vincentre. I have to say this was one of the finest small museums I have ever seen (and I've seen plenty). Neunen is well worth visiting just for the museum alone but there's far more to see. The entire town is charming, and set among the fields and avenues of poplars so familiar to those who know Van Gogh's earlier drawings and paintings. It was in this small town that Vincent's parents lived in The Old Vicarage, still there and beautifully preserved.
If you are interested in the life of Vincent van Gogh, I don't think there is a better place to visit and learn about this extraordinary man than Nuenen. And with the 125th Anniversary of Vincent's death approaching in July, 2015, the town is gearing up with the opening of new historic buildings that will amaze and delight.
Don't leave this lovely town out of your itinerary when visiting Holland. It's just a short train ride from Amsterdam or Schiphol Airport.

If you are around Eindhoven, then you can take a bus to go to Nuenen and definetely see this village and learn more about Van Gogh. Nuenen is also a very nice village itself with lovely houses and gardens so if you also have kids, they can play near the small pond or in the gardens safely especially if the weather is nicer.

Vincent van Gogh is one of the great and famous Dutch painters. He lived for two years in Nuenen and painted there some of his famous paintings. Landmarks of Nuenen appear on his paintings. That's why I went to Nuenen to do the Vincent van Gogh tour. The start of the tour is at the Van Gogh information center, called, a bit corny, the "Vincentre". Attached to this information center is a small museum, entrance for a fee. A route can be followed on foot; along this route markers are erected to highlight some feat of Vincent van Gogh's stay in Nuenen. However, information about this route is vague and inconsistent. Information can be obtained from the Internet, a route description may be bought in the Information Center (€ 6,50), and the ANWB (the Dutch Touring Club) has its own ideas about a Van Gogh walking tour. My time was not completely wasted, because some highlights that I found were the house Van Gogh lived in (easy to find opposite the Information Center), the van Gogh chapel, the Roosdonck windmill, featuring on one of Van Gogh's paintings. However, most markers depicted nondescript places where a long time ago an object was situated, now demolished, which features on a Van Gogh painting. But, generally speaking, the tour was fragmented and disappointing. To add insult to injury, a large fair was erected in the center of Nuenen, almost obliterating several markers and the statue of Vincent van Gogh. Observing this disrespect, I concluded that the generally uninteresting town of Nuenen uses the fame of Vincent van Gogh to the limit to put Nuenen on the tourist map, and they do this not very well. You can't make bricks without straw. In this case the straw is there, but it is used not to advantage. Pity.

On a cold winter morning, I took the bus from Eindhoven central station and got to Neuen in 20 minutes.
At the tiny museum I used the toilet and bought a booklet for 5 Euros that had the map and explanations for each pole.
The tour took a bit less than 2 hours. It was interesting, various and pleasant.

The village of Nuenen lies just a couple of miles outside Eindhoven and is accesible by bus from the central railway station. It is a delightful little place in it's own right but even more so with certain landmarks worth visiting due to the stay there of Vincent van Gogh for two years between 1883 and 1885. van Gogh painted many things that can be seen around the village like The Potato Eaters (sculpture in the park along with his own sculpture), the van Goghkerkje (chapel where his father was a preacher), the Opwettense Watermolen (watermill) and the Windmolen de Roosdonck (windmill). All of these landmarks featured in his paintings at some stage. Also in the village is the house his father lived in where van Gogh stayed for his two years there along with the house where he rented a room and used as a studio during this same time. The Vincentre museum is also located here which has an entrance fee and worth seeing if you are a van Gogh enthusiast and can supply you with a walking trail of 23 places that involved van Gogh in some way. Otherwise the village is a little bustling place full of restaurants and everyday shops. A must visit!

The Vincentre museum is located on the main street of the village of Nuenen, about 4 miles NE of Einhoven, and can reached via the no.s 6,321 & 322 buses from Eindhoven bus station. The entrance fee is 7.50 Euros per adult and audio guides are provided.
Vincent Van Gogh lived in Nuenen from 1883 to 1885, his father was pastor of the Dutch Reformed church, where 14 paintings and drawings including the famous "Potato Eaters" were made during this time. This small museum, based on 3 floors, covers this period and includes a lot of background information about himself and his family, his paintings and sketches, and the local life of the village at that time.
I found this museum to be delightful with fascinating insights pertaining to Van Gogh and his family with the audio visual aids used in presenting this information being excellent and and kept things entertaining. Whilst there are no original paintings or drawings on display, this museum supplemented a previous visit to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam and is well worth a visit for Van Gogh fans.

Nuenen is a lovely little village to visit without a historic story to tell. Add the fact that Vincent Van Gogh spent his early years there, and left a number of paintings of local views, make it all the more attractive.
The VinCenter is a logic place to start. They have a unique(?) interactive, self-guided system to give some background to his work and life in Nuenen. Be sure to visit all levels of this building. Then get the local guided tour to see where he lived, his girlfriend's home, as well as current views of a number of his paintings.

Just a word about the languages in the Vincentre, as some reviews suggest you need to understand Dutch; indeed the displays on the two main floors are all in Dutch, but for an extra €2 you can rent an audio tour in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese or Chinese. This means you can walk around at your own pace and spend time on what interests you most. The audio tour is also synchronized to the soundtrack of the short film upstairs. The audio tour does not work on the top floor, but all displays in the temporary exhibition there are in English as well as Dutch.
The ‘Out and About with Vincent’ booklet describing the 21 locations around the village is also available in French (Promenades dans le sillon de Vincent), German (Auf Vincents Wegen) and Dutch (Op pad met Vincent). All are on sale in the Vincentre shop, which you can visit even if you decide not to visit the museum (which you should!). They include a map and descriptions of each location. At the moment guided tours outside are only available for groups booked in advance, but a group can be as small as 8, so bring some friends along!
One more thing, if you are expecting every second shop in the village to be a souvenir shop, a cheese farm or a wooden shoe factory, you are in the wrong part of the Netherlands! If you want to visit a genuine village where real people live and work, and parts of which haven’t changed since Vincent’s days, you are in the right place. As they say to visitors, “You’ll never get closer to Van Gogh”.

We went to visit the illuminated trial - Starry Night but ended up in the small town of Neuen. It is a charming small town where you have sight visits to teh house where Van Gogh lived with his father for a while. However, the entry fee was high (I do not remember correctly but I think it was about 20 euro). The museum oposite the house offers beautiful souvenirs and site visit.
