- Myra B4 contributionsA wonderful Place for a very enjoyable breakThe Beach Apartment, Nautilus, Westward Ho is beautifully equipped with everything that you need to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable and is spotlessly clean. Claire, the owner has made everything right through from the initial Booking process to the departure details so simple and straight forward. The location of the Apartment is absolutely perfect, directly opposite the beach, parking on site is so convenient and the shops and eateries are just a few steps away. There are many lovely walks to explore, or if you prefer, just sit on the terrace at the Apartment and watch the world go by. We look forward to returning very soon.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2023
- Niki FFareham, United Kingdom1,370 contributionsAlways a great walkOn a blustery day and the tide was in there is still a great walk. We wereucky as tide started to go out and the dogs loved running along the beach. Lovely seeing the kids learn to surf and two wild water swimmers in what looked like choppy water.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 20, 2023
- Han WGuildford, United Kingdom39 contributionsSafe, child friendly beach area with amenities and good parking. Our family short breaks always include a visit to the beach (even in October, as the summer was taken up with family visiting from abroad). Having researched the three or so beaches local to Bideford, I chose Westward Ho!, as I'd been to the area a long time ago, but had never been to this one. We chose the part of the beach that was also a country park on the basis that it was away from the town and parking would be easier. We were pleased to discover that our choice was clean, included a Visitor Center with exhibits of finds from the beach area including whale bones and artifacts from an ancient midden. Public toilets and a cafeteria. There was a natural break that formed essentially a salt-water lake separate from the sea, which was perfect for the children to paddle in and do their sand castles. I could see that in warmer weather, it would have been easy to spend the day there. In October, with rain looming, 2-3 hours was nice.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 27, 2023

- SRT20Bishops Stortford, United Kingdom50 contributionsGreat beach to visitWe found this beach by chance and ended up spending the day here. Car parking behind the Tesco Express is very reasonable with the added bonus of having a Tesco to get a reasonably priced lunch. There are also great Arcades on the sea front. The beach was spotlessly clean and suitable for a buggy.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 4, 2024
- Rossifer tReading, United Kingdom17 contributionsGreat variety of beachesWe really enjoyed the mixture of sand and shingle beaches on offer. Normally beaches don't hold our children's attention for long but we spent several hours here. The food was good and reasonably priced and there is a great visitor centre just down the road.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 8, 2024
- Ellie HCornwall, United Kingdom399 contributionsGreat expansive beach - be careful of the tide!We visited during the lovely sunny day in the last week of the school holidays and although the area was fairly busy by 11:30 we could still find a spot in the main town car park. The beach is so expansive you really don’t feel like there’s tonnes of people. Being north coast we expected it to be very choppy but this made for great body boarding or there were surf schools operating providing lessons. We found a spot by the rocks - another bonus for rockpooling. There was a great little pool that had formed when the tide was out and had warmed up perfectly for our 4 children to enjoy for over an hour despite the chill of the wind the water was lovely and warm. There is a couple of convenience shops nearby - such as a Tesco extra and lots of arcades and pubs/restaurants. A really lovely family beach destination we’re glad we’ve visited!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 1, 2024

After enjoying some lovely time on Westward Ho beach, me and my friend decided to get some ice cream from the pink ice cream kiosk opposite the Slipway takeaway, and ended up being verbally attacked by the old lady running the stand. From the beginning the lady was very dismissive and not very welcoming. Things took a turn for the worse after I accidentally dropped my phone down the large crack between the counter and the freezer. Having done this, the lady immediately said we would have to retrieve it ourselves and she refused to help us. Looking down the crack, the only way of getting it out was to go around into the stand and get a stick of some sort and drag it out. We did offer to attempt to retrieve it ourselves however this was ignored. Thankfully there was a younger lady working there that was willing to help us and found a net to retrieve it. We apologised profusely to the young lady and thanked her for helping us whilst the old lady continued to ignore me and the situation at hand, Myself and my friend were laughing at my bad luck and also the awkwardness of the situation. We were then shouted at and accused by the old lady serving that we were laughing at the young lady helping us, saying "I would of made you come back when we close at 9 to get your phone yourself. This girl is on her break and you are laughing at her and being incredibly rude." We were completely shocked by the aggressive tone of voice used. We became really uncomfortable and confused and made sure to make it clear that we had been apologising and thanking her for helping solve my mistake. We even offered to take over and do it ourselves, however the young lady said she was more than happy to help even though she should have been on her break. The old lady continued to shout at us in front of a crowd and even started talking and saying rude things about us to the customers next to us, even though we were still there and could hear every word. I became hugely upset about the situation as an honest mistake was made and from the start she refused to help and made me feel like a huge inconvenience. Its one thing refusing to help but to then say incredibly rude things to us and about us to other customers she was serving seems like a step too far, just from a minor issue. I know this is one person's experience of this place, however I would strongly advise to go elsewhere for ice cream, as I have never experienced such horrible customer service like this and believe other places would deserve the business more.

The beach is so long that it can accommodate lots of people so even when its really busy, there is space for everyone, especially at low tide as the water goes out a long way. We have been many times and it never feels crowded.
It is also very clean and not smelly.
At low tide the water is only up to waist height for a long way out, so great for children and weaker swimmers.
RNLI lifeguards at the Westward Ho end and middle of the beach, makes it feel very safe.
Dogs are allowed on the far end (Northam end) all year and banned from the Westward Ho end May-October.
The Westward Ho end is most popular with sunbathers partly as the Northam end is designated for larger vessels.
Surfing is great for beginners and intermediate all along the beach. Access to the water is easy as the car parking runs the full length of the beach. However so does the pebble ridge (to protect the shore from erosion) so you have to walk up and over the big pebbles to get to the water. However at the RNLI points there are slipways.
If you have a larger vessel (paddle board or kayak) the slipways make it much easier!!! and the Northam end one is best.
A new visitor centre has been built at the Northam end which has toilets and cafe plus information on the local area.
Westward Ho end has lots of eating places, public toilets (free), shops and arcades next to the beach. There is also Go karting, crazy golf and a bouncy swing thing for children.
At sunset and low tide the view out to sea is spectacular!!!

This is our local beach when at our holiday chalet but we rarely use it. We had a visit with family, parked on the burrows and hauled our tackle over the ramp by the lifeguard hut. The ramp is ok going up but quite steep going down to the beach and there are a number of pebbles to negotiate, courtesy of the effects of winter storms, and nothing can really be done about this. We made sure we sat to the left as the area to the right is the dog beach, although some owners do not obey the code and allow their dogs to run on the left side. A further walk down the burrows is the newly rebuilt visitor centre with toilets and a cafe which is unfortunately rather pricey and food is rather upmarket and not what, in my opinion, t most people would want to take on a beach
There is another ramp, a slipway, at the town end of the beach and although costly efforts have been made to battle the effects of the sea, this too sometimes has pebbles and water at the bottom. At this end there are toilets and showers, beach stalls and other amusements.
After out family day, we had another visit jut with our grandson, visiting at low tide, and were quite surprised with the speed at which the tide came in

After going a few years ago, I forgotten that the beach disappears at hide tide and you are left with only the pebble embankment. We arrived at the hide tide point so had to find somewhere to camp on the dunes side for lunch before making our way on to the beach.
The village is not too bad and an attempt to get people to social distance is in place but other ignored.
Car parking is not as high as some near by beach areas but not the cheapest. The dunes area is still best priced for the day.

This was a wonderful beach to spend a fortnight at. It was so clean and spacious, people were respectful and safely distanced (none of the madness you see on the telly), the coastguards were always there and very proactive, the waves were decent, and there are tons of excellent food/drink/entertainment options nearby. Can’t fault it, even for someone like me who is usually quite grumpy about beach trips :-)

Agree with a previous review arrived at Westward Ho with family the council car park is a disgrace took our £5 then sent us down a dangerous muddy rd expecting us to find a parking space. No park rangers we were advised about the only information was from other drivers telling us not to try to park as there was nothing and was very dangerous not maintained at all. We spent 40 mins trying to park eventually left behind several other cars spoke to attendant who was not interested and no way was refunding £5 what a RIP off shame on you Westward Ho council.

OK beach, depends what you want really, it's a hard wet sandy beach, no soft sand. Difficult to build sand castles! Lol! The car park is huge, £4.50 flat rate, pay cash or card, man in a hut. Effectively you park at the back of the beach anywhere you want, but there is a mountain of boulders you have to climb to access the beach. Not good for young children or elderly. Otherwise very clean. Shops etc at one end.

Maybe it was the time of the year but we found parking reasonably easy and not expensive.
The beach goes on and on and a lovely time to be had is to spend chasing the tide out and a well managed lifeguard squad is in attendance and on hand should they be required.
Usual seaside activities are on hand should you wish to partake, as well as plenty of varied food outlets

Absolutely stunning apartment on the sea front, everything you needed for a relaxing stay perfection. Flowers and fresh milk on arrival was a nice touch.
The owners have thought of everything for any length of stay really was home from home one of the nicest properties we have stayed in. Though out of season on our visit was still plenty to do if you don't mind travelling.

This has to be my favourite spot in North Devon, which I always come back to. It can be a bit touristy and does get busy at times, but you can always find a quiet place to sit away from everyone. The beach is flanked by the famous Pebble Ridge (wonderful for watching the sunset from), and is quite simply gorgeous, stretching for several miles all the way to the estuary and Appledore - you can walk to Appledore in an hour or so via the Northam Burrows Country Park behind the beach - or along the beach itself at low tide. The tide is very fast here though and the waves can be high, so be careful to check the times first. There's a reason why the beach here is so popular with surfers and its easy to get caught out.
There are plenty of cafes and pubs etc in the area selling ice cream, chips and the usual fare with the amusement arcades typified by this kind of resort. There is plenty of parking as well with free toilets and some nice local shops in town seling a variety of different stuff. I could actually see myself retiring to these parts I like it so much.

Is there much to do in this area in the winter? I'm planning a visit on January 3rd.
Written November 28, 2016
The beach of course but most of the holiday type of shops are closed. There are a few shops up from the beach which stay open the year round. Don't be downhearted cos Bideford is not far away and that quite a large town. Easily accessible by car or bus

Where is the best sea fishing area in Westward Ho?
Written September 19, 2016
Beach fishing from the rocks at Westward Ho! (don't get snagged) or spinning for bass in the surf where W Ho beach joins the estuary (don't get cut off by the tide that can come in behind you!) Various places in the Taw/Torridge estuary & Rivers. Fishing tackle shop in Westward Ho will give advice. Boat fishing - Torridge Marine (see web site). Best bait - crab or worms. Sea fishing charters available - possibly Clovelly or Ilfracombe best place.
