You have to be lucky to get a snapshot of the lighthouse in good weather without other tourists spoiling the idyll. Every holidaymaker, whether they're an Otto fan or not, walks, drives or cycles to Pilsum to see the landmark on the North Sea coast. And there's usually a mobile fish stall at the nearby parking lot so that no one has to starve on the dyke 😏. Conclusion: Nice and colorful to look at, but too crowded.

If a Pilsner is left standing in Pilsum for too long, the Pilsner goes to waste! We passed by here on our trip to East Frisia and looked at this cute little place on foot. The old brewery wasn't open yet and it would have been sunny but also windy outside... So we continued on to Greetsiel to enjoy the sun without the wind in the Witthus! Enjoy the wine and food with little hustle and bustle in the garden!

Anyone on holiday in Greetsiel must visit the "Otto Lighthouse"! But it's best not to go on weekends! During the week there's a chance that it won't be so crowded and you can take a nice photo. It looks really cute with its striped sock coloring.
A paid parking lot with a snack bar is about 500 meters away. There is no toilet on site. There is also a machine for the ever-popular souvenir pressed coins at the foot of the lighthouse. It's definitely worth a trip!

We were really looking forward to the parking lot, paid the 3 Euro parking fee and then we couldn't leave the parking lot with the dogs because dogs are not allowed on any of the paths. Unfortunately, it was only afterwards that I read the reviews here about how great it is without the annoying dogs. In the future, people with dogs should not drive in this direction. Luckily, there are much nicer places in the world. Check out Pellworm, they can do it!

Unfortunately, no access for dogs, not even on a leash. Where do you leave them in the summer? It's not possible in the holiday apartment, and even less so in the car. So it's probably better to stay away from this region or leave your four-legged friend at home. It's a shame and no longer appropriate these days.

A wedding ceremony with a difference - this is very possible in the lighthouse. The tower itself is very well laid out. A narrow, steep staircase leads to a mezzanine floor in the (I'll call it) light room. At the wedding ceremony, the table was in the middle and the guests had benches all around with a beautiful panoramic view.
You can have a wonderful view over the mudflats and the dike. Simply fantastic and unique in the Eifel at the same time!
The perfect location for a small wedding party in a small circle

I was looking forward to actually seeing this lighthouse in person from the first moment I saw a picture on the internet. The yellow and red colours, the shape of the lighthouse, the location on the wild and rough North Sea coast. It turned out to be even better than I had imagined and I fell in love with the area. So much so that I stayed three extra days just a half a kilometre from the lighthouse, to properly absorb the local atmosphere. I am very much looking forward to visiting there again.

There really isn't much to be said other that this is a cheerful looking plump little thing that sits on a dike in a dramatic way. Nice to take a stroll or bike ride to and close to a very good nature reserve.

The lighthouse of Pilsum is an El Dorado for photographers, no matter if the weather is fine or not. Actually I prefer days with bad weather to visit this place because it will be less crowded and more peaceful.
The landscape surrounding the lighthouse is flat and just wonderful, you could describe it like that: "If ou look out of your window on Friday, you will see your guests which will be arriving on Monday." Rare plants and birds can be found in the area.
The lighthouse has become world famous since it was the home of Otto in the comedy film "Otto - the movie" from the year 1985.
The lighthouse was built between 1883 and 1890, then it did not work since 1915 due to WWI. It changed the owner serveral times and it always became more and more desolate. In 1972 it was meant to be demolished, but then in 1973 it was rennovated instead and then it also was colored in red and yellow, which makes is very unique until today.
The inside is usually not open to the public, but you can get married there!
There's a parking nearby, but it's pretty expensive, so that I'd suggest to come by bike, it's about 12 km away from Greetsiel, a very romantic and beautiful fisher's village. The area is just perfect for cycling and also hiking.
In summer there are mobile toilets and two huts with foods, but both is rather expensive and of very low quality, just to feed "stupid tourists".

A cute-pretty red and yellow colored lighthouse in between a very quiet landscape and overlooking ca. 400 meter to the sea.
Parking space is huge of 2 Euro. Dog is not allowed to enter the vicinity to the lighthouse. I saw Benches along the walkways.
It was definitely raining when were there and I find it more Romantic while it was also so windy and cold. Worth a visit!

Greetsiel - Werbung machen für Urlaub mit Hund und dann nur an den Hundestrand dürfen. Schon seit etlichen Jahren so. Wir sind an die dänische Nordsee ausgewichen dort ist man toleranter. Dort hat man in den Dünen super Hütten
