A Monstary in the Mountains, Looking Magical
Oct 2020
In terms of presentation, architecture and culture, the Ostrog Monastery is a must-visit. Access is limited by a narrow, winding and sometimes scary road with an increasing number of hairpin turns as you near. You may have to park a distance and walk the rest.

Access to the monstery itself can be limited in the busy season. In October, during the pandemic, no one was there. The entire visit, at a casual pace, can take <30 minutes. Photography is not permitted.

The architecture, tiling and painting are unique and beautiful. The "monastery agains the mountain" can look for magical. It reminded me of the Taktsang Monastery in Bhutan and Hozoviotissa on the Greek Isle of Amorgos.

You should check it out

Unbelievable

A place which you just have to see with your own eyes to believe it truly exists. Truly epic. Loved the chapel edged on the cliff.

Excellent

Precious place. Those who complain are simply typical modern spoiled shallow outcriers. The whole place is about character and temper. So stop crying you have to wait in the queue. This is not another Starbucks you have to be served in 5 minutes or so. This whole place is about ability to withstand hardship for what you believe in, which counts important and requires respect beliver your or you aren't. So be at least 5% as strong and you will make it fine.

worth the trip up the mountain
Sep 2019
It is a bit of a scary drive up the mountain to reach the car park. There is no charge to park, and there are toilets. Its then a 10 min walk up hill on uneven ground and steps. We visited on our own accord rather than organised tour, so I think the tour buses are allowed up to the Monastery drop off location saving the walk.
The upper monastery is set in the rocks. When you arrive at the top, there a few windows to the left which have long queues. These are people purchasing incense sticks and holy water. You do not need a ticket to get in, so keep walking straight ahead and join the queue to get in. It is still a practising monastery so be respectful i.e cover legs and shoulders. Some women were also wearing head scarfs. It is smaller inside than I was expecting, and it was very busy when we visited. It does offer lovely views across the mountain.
Depending which way you come up to the monastery, it will be worth stopping at Hotel Sokoline to take in the fantastic views. I have given a separate review for this place.

Impressive

It's really impressive to see up close how and where the monastery is located.
Don't be scared by the road leading to it, it's not bad actually.
You can drive all the way up to the Upper monastery, but a better idea is to park at the Lower Monastery and walk the 3 km up. There are two ways, you can take the stairs which lead all the way up or walk on the road. The way leads you through the forest and offers a very nice view of the monastery from the bottom of the rock.
Up there you can of course focus you can pray and focus on the religious side of the place. Or you can also admire the amazing construction and enjoy a breathtaking view of the valey below your feet.
The upper monastery has also some facilities for tourists, like vending and coffee machine or toilets.
It's worth taking the hike, even if only for the view.

A must see!
Oct 2019
Built into the hill, high up in the mountains, this is a unique and spiritual place. This is still a practicing Orthodox monastery, much revered by the Montegrans. Go there early in the morning before the tours get there.

Amazing!
Oct 2019
Well what to say; the Ostrog monastery is just amazing! Start with the road; whoa! Tight turns and a really narrow road with beautiful views to the valley. The monastery itself is a amazing sample of building work.
The decor is very beautiful, though the rock chapel where relics of St. Basil of Ostrog's lies is quite plain. The upper balcony has beautiful mosaic works on the walls and the view from the monastery to the valley is breath taking.
There is s small shop from where you can buy all kinds of souvenirs.

A must in Montenegro and this place is just 45 min taxi ride from the city costing less than euro 35. Worth the visit and vehicle get close to church. Historical site with an amazing sight. Really enjoyed the visit and need at least 90 min at the site for admiring the building.

Adventure
Sep 2019 • Couples
The path going up is not advisable for weak hearted and people with fear of heights. Very narrow road. Once your reach the peak landing for the parking lot you still need to climb the stiff and slippery stone. Better wear lose clothing and comfortable closed shoes with anti slip sole. Its a place more for a pilgrimage than a tourist spot. The view from the top overlooking the horizon is magnificent especially for nature lover. We were not able to get it to the church because of the very long line. Still worth it to visit. They provided extra route going up for disabled and old people.

Great tours
Oct 2019 • Business
When ever I would come at Ostrog it would be as a little pilgrimage for me. As a tour guide I do come often even for the business but I would always feel special at the hills of Monastery.
This is a special place not just for Montenegro Orthodox groupation, but for the whole Montenegro.
