We headed up the long narrow winding road only to find Eremo Di Calamini closed.
We were advised that it would be open as did the sign on the gate so we were very disappointed.

Nice visit and nice walk to the monastery
Aug 2017 • Couples
It was a very nice and tranquil place to visit. The walk up to it is also very nice and quiet. The church in the cave was interesting, the whole place seems to be so close to nature.

Tranquility with a fantastic view
Aug 2017 • Couples
This is such a tranquil place to visit up in the hills with breath taking views.
We have visited twice; once approaching it on foot through the woods from above and once by driving up from Gallicano. There is parking available outside the Hermitage grounds and a toilet available within the grounds.
The Eremo di Calomini consists of a working monastery and two churches - one built in a cave in the rock face and a separate ornate church building (one might say 'over the top' ornate). The site doesn't take long to explore but it is well worth a visit and is a calm and relaxing place in which to rest awhile.
There is an excellent restaurant very near to the Hermitage which serves food/ meals from 13:00 until 16:00 - a great place to eat.

Dramatic cliff-edge hermitage, open sometimes
May 2017 • Couples
This hermitage was originally built into the rock face in around 1000AD, since then it was enlarged several times. The white painted exterior makes an impressive view from the road down below in the valley.
Even if not religious, the historical and scenic value of the place will interest you. The views are really breath-taking- forested mountains everywhere!
We arrived at 4PM and were lucky the man was just opening the gate, the hours are not consistent so phone ahead to be prepared, otherwise it will be likely closed.
Use a sat nav to find it and prepare your own research.

How did they do it?
Oct 2016 • Friends
This little church and monastery, partly built into the cliff side, is a little gem which always leaves me wondering how on earth they did it. The church itself is small and very ornate; a little too much so for me, until I think of how the monks managed to decorate the ceiling. The views from the door, and everywhere else on the site, are spectacular and its elevated position make it a welcome place to visit in the very hot weather. The old chapel, a few steps from the church, is a place of calm and contemplation; very simple and inspirational. There are a few monks still living here; they are part of an enclosed order and I would suggest that any visitors respect their areas and not go into the cloisters even if the doors are open.

There is an agriturismo very close where you can get something to eat and drink, enjoy wonderful views and even stay.

Peace and Tranquility
Jun 2016
So peaceful definitely worth a visit. We were taken for a lunch at the nearby restaurant by friends and then visited the Hermitage, it is built into the rock face and can be seen from a distance. It is fascinating to think how all those years ago when they built this place how they possibly got all the building materials up there and before they had the luxury of motorised vehicles.

Fabulous Position
Aug 2016 • Friends
I have visited this restaurant twice in the last month and the antipasti is superb, white wine cold and crisp. On both occasions I had the grilled trout which was fresh and perfectly cooked. The service is efficient and friendly and the restaurant is in a stunning position and very reasonably priced - highly recommended

So peaceful and such great views!
Jul 2016 • Friends
We were taken for a very enjoyable lunch at the nearby restaurant by friends and then visited the Hermitage, which we had noticed many times before as it is built into the rock face and can be seen from a distance. It is amazing to imagine how they built this place. It was so peaceful. We were also able to visit the Grotto which was lovely too.
