This is a small, humble church in the historic centre of the ancient town of Urbisaglia. From the outside, it is plain and unremarkable.
Its claim to fame is that it’s the oldest existing church in the town. It is unclear when exactly it was built, but it’s thought to be around the 15th century.
Its singular feature is a stark, white marble portal that goes back to Roman times.
The arched, green wooden doors are flanked by fluted, white, columns. Above the door, set high into the brickwork is a half-moon window. Apart from this, there is no other ornamentation.
A small plaque gives some very brief information in Italian about the Roman doorway and the frescoes of the Virgin Mary and Saint Andrew of Avellono beside the altar.
Unfortunately it was shut every time we were in Urbisaglia so we never saw the frescoes inside and we couldn’t find any information to indicate when it would be open.
Whilst it is only a minor sight and is not a stopping point on its own, you are likely to pass by if you are exploring the town. It is located opposite the bell tower and the Palazzo Comunale. The cobbled lanes that run off to the sides of the bell tower and the church are very pretty to wander around, with stone houses and terracotta pots of colourful spring flowers.

In the hot July sun, after visiting the Roman ruins below the town, this church was a cool and beautiful haven. The door is Roman white stone and there are frescos inside that date back to the beginning of the 16th century - lovely little side chapels provided a welcome relief from the weather outside. But even if it was perfect, comfortable weather, you would want to go inside and spend time marvelling at the way builders in days gone by accomplished such feats of architecture. It is right on the town square - the town itself is small and easily visited in less than an hour, but be sure to stay and have lunch or a cold drink at the cafes that are 100 feet from the church.
