Great views of Balaton and interesting castle ruins if you can handle the steep trek up . We parked at the castle entrance (not the very bottom of the hill) and my son explored every turret and room in the place. Refreshments were available at the castle itself and at the car park/entrance area.

We visit it in a hot day, but in the last period of season so it wasn't crowded. Not too much information, atleast that what we felt. No tourist guide offered . Tickets price little high for what the sight offer.

The renovation of the Castle has just been completed. Exciting exhibits, interactive elements, safe environment, clean toilets, cheap ticket. Can get very busy in the high season, arrive early. Unique view. Bonus: evening concerts at the Castle, quality food-court by the entrance.

The castle of Szigliget ... we've visited thus summer this place and have to admit is very interesting and a very nice place to spend several hours.
On the northern shore of lake Balaton you shall find this castle - close to the city of Keszthely in the village of Szigliget.
Parking is free of charge - and I recommend you park at the bottom of the hill and take a walk to the entrance of the castle - there is a parking lot here too, but during the summer is crowded - or should I say very crowded.
So you have to hike a bit up the hill to the castle of Szigliget - the climb is fairly demanding .. so those with mobility issues should attend only if they got assistance .. otherwise I don't recommend visiting.
Entrance fee is 2000 Huf /Adult ...so not expensive at all ... and once you enter you can work your way through the fortification - discover the different ages of the castle - learn a bit about the history of the place and about the castles around lake Balaton.
Is is very interesting and even if you don't speak Hungarian , the plaques are also in English and/or German ...
A more than 750 years old castle/ruin - with a lot of history to tell to the visitor - a place that I do recommend you visit when you are in the area.

You must first climb a cobbled road at a steep angle for about 300 feet. Along the way, there are interesting placards detailing the geological history (volcanic) of the surrounding area and the local flora and fauna. Once you climb to the top, there is an entrance fee of about $5. There are archery demonstrations by locals in knight costume in a small amphitheater close to the entrance. For a small fee, they will teach you how to shoot an arrow. This would be fun for kids (6-12). Local schools often organize field trips here. The ruins are fascinating, provide amazing vantage points for 360 views of entire Balaton area and authentic reproductions of ancient kitchens, rooms and a small ancient chapel. Posters around the entire site detail the history of the castle and surrounding area. There is a lot of climbing around different levels, so this tour is not for the infirm. Once you climb down the road, there is excellent icecream next to the church.

This is a really impressive and well maintained attraction. Our children had a great time clambering all around, imagining themselves firing cannons etc. I particularly liked the section with decorated and furnished rooms depicting life at the time. The Benedictine chapel, the oldest part of the ruins, is also a very spiritual place. A great way to spend an hour or two.

Walk up and around the castle to work up your appetite for the utterly fantastic ice cream cafe just below. Or you could have the ice cream first & then go to the castle before going for another ice cream!

The several year efforts of local initiatives were strengthened by bodgetary support in the recent years, so Szigliget Castle gets nicer and nicer, and provides more an more attractive programs as well.
