Viru Bog Trail
Viru Bog Trail

About
Viru Bog trail is 1 km off the Tallinn-Narva highway (E20) on the road leading to Loksa. The 3.5 km trail starts at the car park on the Loksa road and ends at the car park on the Kemba road. The shortest walk along the trail (ca 1 km) is from the Loksa road car park to the viewing tower and back again. The bog is a perfect example of this typical Estonian land formation and its flora.

Unique hike through a beautiful natural area. The first 1/3 of the hike (after a short walk on forest trails) is on a wide and easy boardwalk until you get to the observation tower. Most people just go that far, then head back. If you continue the loop trail, the boardwalk narrows to two boards wide. But you get to see so much more. We saw lots of ducks up close, and flocks of geese overhead. And peace and quiet. We were there at the break of spring, trees and flowers just beginning to bud, and for the last 2/3 of the hike, saw ZERO other people. In the summer, it’s surely more crowded. Bring water, and be sure to use the bathroom at the parking area before you start - there are NO facilities once you get on the trail. We highly recommend this hike.

The bog is really easy to reach from Tallinn. We took the bus 151 from the Balti Jaam station in Tallinn but basically any bus towards Loksa or Rakvere will do. Drop off at "Loksa Tee" bus stop, walk some 700 meters down the smaller road towards Loksa and the starting point of the Nature trail is on the right. The trail is well maintained and we spent a good two hours there. We visited the bog before the noon and at least then there were only few people.

Not quite sure what all the fuss is about. Was a nice enough walk but wasn’t blown away. Wish the signage on the walk had been more detailed. Wouldn’t go out of my way to visit but worth a stop if you’re in the area.
Lahemaa National Park is poorly signposted.

I did several trails in the beautiful Lahemaa National Park and the viru bog walk was my favourite.
A well maintained boardwalk leads you through the bog. In the middle is a viewing tower with stunning views. And half of the boardwalk, including the tower is accessible by wheelchair or pushchair.

We walked the whole trail, making sure to read the information signs which are in Estonian and English.
First - there are some pit toilets, but the waste is almost up to the seat so I was not going to venture there.
You walk along from the parking area on a dirt path until you get to the bog proper. Then it starts out as a wide wooden path until about 1/3 of the way though the bog - where the observation tower is. The tower is very nicely built but it gives a warning about the # of people (30 I think) can be on it.
After the observation tower, the path is two boards wide with some supports to the side you can step on as you need to let people get by.
You can see small carnivorous plants starting by the sign that explains about the plants. I think it is Drosera capensis that we saw. We did not see any Venus fly traps. Very cool - from that point on, we saw them frequently - probably because we knew what to look for.
There wasn't many bugs except some dragonflies. Not very many birds either. The acidic nature of the water does not support wildlife really.
There was a local person selling tea and other hand made goods at the parking area as well, but I suppose don't plan on it. Bring water.

Stunning trail with very diverse things to see. Not often you can visit and explore bogs in that way and just walk through. Definitely recommend stopping by when in the area.

Definitely worth a stop - Must see with a walkway over the bog along with an observation tower. Along the way you will be educated on how a peat bog forms and the consequences of draining and mining the peat. Can take an hour or two depending on whether you go beyond the tower and do the full walking loop. An area for swimming if you are game for it.

The Viru Bog Trail was one of the highlights of our day trip to Lahemaa National Park. Situated just off the E20 highway, it was easy to find with just a road map.
The trail is well signposted with plenty of information about the formation of peat bogs. As it leaves the forest, a well maintained boardwalk ensures that the environment is preserved for the future. The walkway is wide enough for two people to comfortably pass each other and there are occasional passing places if you want to rest for a while, although no seating.
About halfway round is a wonderful viewing platform with both steps and a ramp, so even those in a pram or wheelchair can admire the view.
Well worth a visit.

The trail through the Viru Bog is very educational and makes for a good half-day trip from Tallinn. Everything is very well signposted, including instructive panels in Estonian and English with child-friendly content. There is a viewing tower in the bog which provides a good overview of the area and the impressive scenery. The only downside, however, is that the wooden planks through the swamp are quite narrow which is an issue when there is a lot of people (as at the time of our visit) due to two-way walking.

I’ve been to Viru bog countless times and it never ceases to amaze me, still takes my breath away every time I go. I can seriously say that if you have a little time in Tallinn, hire a car for one day and take the short 30 km trip to Viru bog trail. You won’t be sorry.
The wooden trail runs along the swamp, over the little swamp lakes and the absolutely unique bog landscape. There’s a long version that goes on for quite long but you can’t also just take a leisurely stroll to the viewing tower and then walk back. In summer i’ve seen people swimming in the bog lake... not sure it’s actually allowed but My Scottish friends did it and enjoyed it to no end.
Any time of year you go, it’s going to be fantastic! I can’t recommend it highly enough. I take all my guests and visitors there, they all love it!
