Nice little museum

Sadly we were unable to have a guided tour of the houses which would have made quite a difference to our visit, but the museum was really interesting (no charge, donations only), and we could see the setting by the river (just like a model in the museum in Victoria!)

Fabulous Cultural center
Sep 2018 • Couples
It was well worth the price of the tour plus the nearly hour of time, to be able to go into the Frog House, the Eagle House, and the Fireweed House, three important representations of long houses used by the First Nations people of this whole Northwest region.

However, we really regretted that they could not provide helps for totem pole interpretation. Our guide was able to provide comments on a few figures on a couple of the poles. But we really wanted a printed sheet. We found clues about a couple of the images on one pole spread through comments on three or more post cards they sell. No book that would help, either.

Plus, while they would not allow photos inside the buildings, it would have been wonderful to have bought a pamphlet or small booklet that would have had pictures (or even drawings or sketches).

If they would have had either (or both), we would give fives stars.

Take the Tour
Jun 2018 • Couples
This recreated Gitxsan First Nations village on the banks of the Skeena River, provides an insight into the lives of the native people. I recommend you take the guided tour, to see some fantastic artefacts in each of the longhouses and here the interesting stories of how people lived

A must do if you are in the area of New Hazelton.

The small museum if a gem which does not overwhelm or bore you. What it does is present quality artifacts which are caused to clearly explain the history of the local people.

Interesting examples of clan totem poles.

We had the good fortune to be able to talk for an hour with the site manager and get a clear understanding of the relationship between the Canadian government and the First Nation Peoples.

Still enjoyed in October
Oct 2017 • Couples
The museum and inside of the buildings were closed when we visited in mid-October 2017. We were able to walk among the totems and exterior of the buildings, which was rewarding in itself. It's a very beautiful site on the Skeena River and the golden leaves of fall made it even more beautiful. Worth a stop even if the museum and buildings aren't open.

Beautiful setting, on the banks of the Skeena River. The replicas of the longhouses were amazing. Some beautiful artifacts in each. The guide was very knowledgeable. The museum had some beautiful artifacts as well. The gift shop was great.
