An intimate theatrical experience
Nov 2019
We have visited the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond (London) several times, and each time has been enjoyable and good value. The Audience sits around the sides of the square stage in two tiers, stage level and a level above that, each a double row of seating. In all about ten seats per row per level per side, so it is a very intimate gathering. One corner is the audience entrance/exit and the other three can be used for actor entrances/exits on the stage level. Prices are very reasonable and many of the productions are new presentations of contemporary or classical plays. Pre-play and interval there is a small bar. An excellent alternative to the hustle and bustle of central London theater-land.

Our first visit to this small but comfortable theatre in Richmond. We were very impressed by the way the way the theatre staff helped a number of visually impaired customers.

Appalling experience

Unexpected things do happen. This is one of the many charms of live theatre. Last night, there was a technical hitch in the middle of a dreadfully written and poorly acted play about Amsterdam. At the beginning of the pause in the action, a stage hand muttered something about a technical problem. After 9 or 10 minutes I, a member of the audience, had to go 'backstage' to find out what was happening. This prompted a member of the theatre staff to come out to explain to the audience, many of whom were walking out. As the play was so awful and the technical repair was taking a long time, we also left the theatre.

The house manager was barely apologetic. She was defensive in an unsympathetic way.

Furthermore, the £25 seats were exceedingly uncomfortable and due to an insufficient rake, we had a good view of the backs of the heads in front of us.

Lastly, in order to reach our seats, we had to step across a black painted wooden box on the floor with a real risk of being tripped up by it.

All in all our experiences of this theatre were dismally disappointing.

Dealing with Clare!

Went to see this play and had never been there before! The irony of the name of the play was obviously not lost on us although hubbie was amusing and went on about this a bit. Book the drinks for the interval as bar is very small here.

Saw ‘While the sun shines’ at this little but professionally run venue. Thoroughly recommend checking out the theatre.

Fantastic little theatre in the round.

I have seen a few plays and jazz events here. It's a great little theatre, very intimate and in the round, you at times feel very much a part of the play. Facilities are good with a nice bar. It is also close to Richmond Station for the overground and tube plus numerous buses. Good restaurants and pubs on the doorstep.

Excellent intimate theatre

This was my first visit to this theatre, but I will definitely be returning. It's very intimate- I was in the first row and could have reached out to touch the actors.
The production of Terrence Rattigan's While the Sun Shines was outstanding. Excellent acting and directing.
Very comfortable seats. Nice bar.
I had the best seat in the house and paid 25GBP. Forget Broadway.

Terrible play

The theatre is delightfully shabby and small and basically you’re almost on top of the actors who are almost always brilliant - Oh dear - but some of the plays are terrible and you feel sorry for the poor actors who give it their all.

Delightful Sunday night jazz evening
Jan 2019 • Friends
The Sunday evening jazz event at the Orange Tree theatre was a delightful culmination of a three day weekend in Richmond. It was our first visit and what an intimate, cosy venue this is. We had the pleasure of hearing Elaine Del Mar perform some memorable Jazz numbers accompanied by a talented pianist and double bass player. Simply lovely soothing music in a fantastic venue.

Puts on interesting plays - we went to a restoration comedy. It was well acted, and the speakers were very clear. You could both see and hear everything. It’s in the heart of Richmond with very good public transport as well as car parks. There is also a small cafe, and the staff were very accommodating and pleasant.
