With friends we called into the church as we were passing through Brampton having visited the nearby Lanercost Priory earlier in the day. The church although relatively recently built in the late 1870’s is worth a visit to see the stained-glass windows. The windows were apparently designed by artist Edward Burn-Jones and built by the William Morris studios. The colours in the glass are so bright and vibrant even after 150 years, well worth the visit.

Visit for the brilliant Burne-Jones stained glass windows and especially the 15 light great East Window.

Note especially the Pelican in the bottom row. This is unique to Brampton, whereas many other of the cartoon have been re-used in other churches by Morris and co who turned the designs into these glass windows.

If possible see the windows with either the church lighting or even better the glorious sunshine from outside pouring through into the nave..

I tried to gain entry here to observe the pre rapahelite stained glass windows I had read about, but it was locked on a Saturday morning and there was no information about them outside. Would have been helpful to have opening times clear for visitors passing through.

It's an astonishing surprise to find that Philip Webb's only church is tucked away in Brampton. Lovely rich red sandstone, and wonderful stained glass windows by Burne-Jones and William Morris. Who knew?

The pews were made by William Morris and ALL the windows designed by Burne-Jones and made by William Morris's factory in Carlisle. It is stupendous. Try to creep in by just looking round the door. If you go in too far you will trigger the lights. The natural daylight streaming through the windows is magical. I just saw this before the lights came on. They were still good. Perhaps the church could change this by putting a manual switch on the lights? Could save some electricity too? But thank you so much for leaving this church open so we can all enjoy such magnificent works of art.

This is a pure gem of a place. We found it from a leaflet picked up in Carlisle and visited just after the Sunday morning service when we were invited in for tea and coffee and very friendly conversation by the members of the congregation. They were very aware of the architectural gem they have in this lovely church a Pre-Raphaelite tour-de-force. Designed by Philip Webb with windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones and manufactured by William Morris.

Ourselves and our dogs were made very welcome on our visit . The wife of a retired vicar spent some time explaining the church's history and the magnificent stained glass windows. The short midday reading and prayer was an unexpected bonus.

The only church designed by pre-raphaelite architect Philip Webb. All the stained glass was made in 1878–80 by Morris & Co. and designed by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. It is all of a piece, not a hotch-potch of styles. When we visited there as a man playing the piano in the church which added to the atmosphere. A very peaceful and relaxing place to visit, close to the village centre.
