Best Burne-Jones windows anywhere
Aug 2021
Visit for the brilliant Burne-Jones stained glass windows and especially the 15 light great East Window.

Note especially the Pelican in the bottom row. This is unique to Brampton, whereas many other of the cartoon have been re-used in other churches by Morris and co who turned the designs into these glass windows.

If possible see the windows with either the church lighting or even better the glorious sunshine from outside pouring through into the nave..

Glorious building, stained glass magnificent
Mar 2020 • Solo
Came here on a Sunday afternoon, as had been staying in a nearby Airbnb, before getting bus into Carlisle. The church was empty so was able to walk around and experience the splendour of this beautiful and peaceful building. The windows are Pre-Raphaelite and made by William Morris & Co. Spectacular. There is a good shop and honesty box for postcards, books, prayer cards etc

Breathtaking pre-Raphaelite windows

We heard about this church while at Lanercost Priory, & made a diversion to visit it. Unlike many churches, this represents a single vision of an architect. He commissioned all the stained glass from pre-Raphaelite artists & they are just magnificent. The east end window held us transfixed by its rich colour & design.

It really is all about that stunning East window.

From a historical perspective, St Martins Church in Brampton is a relatively modern structure, having been built in 1878 to replace a Georgian church dating from 1789. Before this, the town church was situated at the site now occupied by the Old Church, 2 miles away beside the river Irthing.

Designed by architect Philip Webb, St Martins is rather different to most Victorian churches in that it isn’t built in the Gothic style, and the first thing that strikes you on entering is the feeling of light and wide open space, and I particularly liked the white, panelled ceilings that augment the rather attractive almost pinkish stone towers and arches.

The view down the central aisle lets you appreciate these features fully as they lead the eye to the stunning East window, that is clearly the most lauded and striking feature of the church. Designed by artist Edward Burns-Jones, who also designed the other windows in the church, it is a beautiful piece of art as much as it is a piece of religious architecture and really is worth travelling to see.

Wow... what windows. Stupendous Burne-Jones
May 2019 • Couples
The pews were made by William Morris and ALL the windows designed by Burne-Jones and made by William Morris's factory in Carlisle. It is stupendous. Try to creep in by just looking round the door. If you go in too far you will trigger the lights. The natural daylight streaming through the windows is magical. I just saw this before the lights came on. They were still good. Perhaps the church could change this by putting a manual switch on the lights? Could save some electricity too? But thank you so much for leaving this church open so we can all enjoy such magnificent works of art.

A beautiful buiding

This is a pure gem of a place. We found it from a leaflet picked up in Carlisle and visited just after the Sunday morning service when we were invited in for tea and coffee and very friendly conversation by the members of the congregation. They were very aware of the architectural gem they have in this lovely church a Pre-Raphaelite tour-de-force. Designed by Philip Webb with windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones and manufactured by William Morris.

A warm welcome in a beautiful church
Aug 2018
Ourselves and our dogs were made very welcome on our visit . The wife of a retired vicar spent some time explaining the church's history and the magnificent stained glass windows. The short midday reading and prayer was an unexpected bonus.

Worth visiting

St Martins is a lovely Church just a little way from the market square in the town. It’s main feature are it’s stained glass windows which are delightful although it’s sad that the details of some of the side windows is obscured why seemingly necessary wire protection
