About
Beautiful, relaxing hillside Gardens with stunning views over the Weald of Kent & an excellent cafe. For garden experts we have a magnificent collection of rhododendrons & azaleas, some grown from seeds brought back by the plant hunters. We have a wonderful Rose Walk, Walled Garden, with spectacular terraces & water feature, our newly restored Rock Garden, filled with ferns & water cascades & giant specimen trees. For families we have a fab adventure playground, den building woods, boat swing, holiday activities & our much loved resident yeti (weekends & school holidays 2-4). Seasonal highlights include: bluebell woods in early spring, rhododendrons & azaleas later in spring, our alium & peony borders early summer, followed by fragrant roses, rounding off the season with spectacular autumn colour, especially from our beautiful acer collection. Dogs on leads very welcome.

- Rick WSevenoaks, United Kingdom2,103 contributionsRiverhill Gardens are open!At last River Hill gardens are open once again! With a reduced entry price of just £6.50 the gardens are a delight to visit. Although it is too late to see the rhododendrons The Pyrenees are looking beautiful and indeed the garden is full of interesting corners and colour. We especially liked the new rock garden that has only just opened. One of the special things about River Hill gardens is the personal welcome by the owner’s wife, Sarah and the fact that autos kitchen have installed a takeaway cafe there serving coffees teas cakes and nibbles. The prices are reasonable and there are plenty of places in the garden to sit down and enjoy your takeaways or even to share your own picnic. The garden has lovely views over the Weald of Kent, an interesting wooded area where children can build dens and even its own Yeti who appears during school holidays and at weekends. The owners have done a really good job making the place safe with hand sanitizers, very clean toilets but you do need to book ahead using their website. We were so impressed by the place and because we live locally, have decided to extend our ticket to annual membership. River Hill is a nice place for children to run around and for adults to get some peace and quiet. Do go and enjoy itThank you for your lovely review Rick, very much appreciated. - mrsbsouthendRayleigh, United Kingdom779 contributionsStunningly beautiful and interesting gardens. Our first trip out of Essex was to help support a beautiful garden in Kent after their lockdown. For a bargain price of £6.50 each my daughter and I had a really delightful afternoon. Firstly - you must book online. You have to go in a particular half hour time slot and visits should be limited to around two hours. You can't get in if you just turn up - but booking is really easy online! The staff were incredibly friendly, from the lovely lady on the gate to the staff in the Cafe. All facilities are open (cafe is take away only but there are places nearby in the gardens to sit and enjoy a drink) and the toilet is accessible to all. However the gardens are in places quite steep and tough on the old knees and thighs. I think the elderly or the smaller people might have a bit of a hard time. However there were woods (with an unseen yeti!) to build dens, a lovely maze and lots of places for hide and seek. Picnic and normal benches dotted around and the gazebo in the formal garden was somewhere to shelter if the rain started. We easily made it round in the two hours required, including a treat of a tea and a hot chocolate from the cafe. The panoramic views as the sun broke through was as much a highlight as the beautiful trees and plants. Really smashing.Visited June 2020Written June 27, 2020
- jerryskcKansas City, Missouri533 contributionsDelightful, well ordered and renovated gardens. Well worth a visitThese are lovely gardens, although I should declare that I am no horticulture expert. The entry to Riverhill is well signed but would still be easy to miss as it is on the apex of a bend in a fairly fast road out of Sevenoaks. I was here with elderly relatives who require disabled spaces and there are several close to the main entrance to the gardens and right by the house. The main parking lot is further a way and requires a walk that is on a slope, as is the whole garden, so be aware if you have folks with you for whom walking is an issue. As one enters, everything is well signposted and there is a kiosk to pay - we actually reserved entry times which may be worth doing at busy times. To the right of the entrance is an excellent small cafe and tables outside which is great for refreshments either before or after experiencing the gardens. The gardens themselves are delightfully presented and are, apparently, in the throes of a long term restoration and renovation to reclaim their former glories but don't let that worry you. Everything that you can see is completed and there is plenty of it. We engaged one of the volunteer gardeners who told us a bit of the history and the plans to reclaim all the former areas in due course. What you can see is extremely well kept and the plants are labelled so those, like me, of a less botanical bent know at what they are looking. There are wonderful views across southern Kent and it pays to walk down to the summer house (just past the washrooms) to get the best vistas. The paths are largely gravel, and one of our party was in a wheelchair. As I mentioned, the garden is on a hillside so there are some slopes to go up and down. It is perfectly doable in a wheelchair, at least the main areas, but it does take some pushing! All in all a great garden to spend a couple of hours and they have regular displays of sculpture etc. although we were a little early to see this season's exhibits which run June through August I understand. We were there in spring so a great many plants were in flower and delightful they were. Well worth a visitThank you so much for this very lovely and thoughtful review. I am sure lots of potential visitors will find it very helpful! This is such a lovely place , everything for social distancing was set up nicely , kids loved it . this would be five star if it was not for the cafe Otto. It was beyond disappointing especiallly as it was recomended as very good quality. I am talking about the sandwiches wich were not pleasant to eat at alll. They didnt seem fresh but what they lack in freshness compasated in blandness . the quality of kids lunch bags was appalling very dry bun with very dry ham which appeared slightly green in colour -- as if they made the sandwich before the lockdown and now are trying to sell them off for
Coffee was below evarge as well, the only nice thing was the apple and elderflower juice my kids had with their lunch bag .I will definetly recommend visiting this place but don't bother with the cafe, for the prices they have there its not worth it.

Thank you for your feedback. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your visit to the gardens but are so sorry that your experience at Otto’s fell short of expectations.
We discussed the issues with the Cafe Manager today who was very apologetic. The lack of butter was due to an ordering error and your comments regarding the sandwiches have now been addressed. Staff training issues meant that your concerns were not dealt with as they should have been on the day. Otto's are so sorry that your experience was not as they had wished and the manager has asked that you make yourself known to them on your next visit and they will arrange a complimentary lunch for you.
I hope that you will come back to the gardens again soon.

My friend and I spent approx two hours 1 hour of which was spent in the cafe grounds enjoying a nice relaxed lunch of toasted vegan sandwiches and ploughman's sandwich, cakes and tea(large pot good value)!
We then spent the rest walking round the grounds twice to find anything exotic and Himalayan. We came to the conclusion that it was good for families as it wasn't expensive to get in and you could take your dog. Although we decided against this as the weather today a little inclement. You could upgrade your £9.25 ticket reduced due to covid by £8.50 and then you got membership for the whole year! But it's not on our doorstep and there really wasn't enough to warrant that.
The views could be far reaching on a clear day and the little trail and children's playground would be appealing as I said to families.
We couldn't go in the house due to covid so perhaps next year will try again with that to discover.
We followed it by a shopping spree in Sevenoaks!

Hi Thank you so much for your review, I just wanted to clarify a few of the points you raised so that other visitors are not mislead or confused:
I'm afraid that there has never been a River here. The River part of Riverhill comes from the Anglo Saxon term for hill.
If you visit us again please be aware that you are very welcome to add your cafe visit time on to your 2 hour garden slot. So please do spend the full 2 hours in the gardens and then enjoy the cafe in addition.
At the moment our entry price is reduced to £6.50 for everyone over 4 and we are doing season tickets for £15. You can upgrade your day ticket to a season ticket for an additional £8.50. This is then valid for the rest of the season, not the year, we close on the 1st of November and re-open in March.
The house is a family home and is never open to the public. It did used to be a long time ago but we have no current plans to open it up.
Thanks again for taking the time to leave a review.

Enjoyed our first trip so much we went back three weeks later with the grandchildren. They had a marvellous time and whilst not quite as interested in the marvellous plants and trees as us, they had a lot of fun in the adventure playground and exploring the rock garden. They did however love locating the keys around the garden and reading about the various trees. The monkey puzzle tree was their favourite. Unfortunately we did not have time to spot the yeti - so we have a good excuse to go back again.
Everything is very well organised during these times and we felt completely safe and secure. Plenty of places for picnics and we found a lovely spot in the rock garden.
The cafe is well run and the children all chose a picnic bag which they all enjoyed.
A great trip and one I would highly recommend.

We've been coming to Riverhill for at least the past 7-8 years, since the children were tiny, we absolutely love it, it's our garden away from our garden. However last year it was understandable bringing in the timed slots - we bought our season ticket as usual but didn't get much use out of it as the slots were always fully booked when we wanted to come - part of the joy of Riverhill with a season ticket is that you can just 'pop in' for an hour of fresh air and a run around! I'm disappointed to see that the time slots system has remained, there's no reason for it when there are now no restrictions, and even on very busy days the gardens never feel busy once you're away from the cafe. All other local gardens you don't have to book in advance, so sadly we won't be visiting this year and will opt for Hever or Penshurst membership instead. The prices have also crept up quite a lot in the past couple of years for the size of the gardens and the time open, shame as we've had so many happy times here.

Hello,
Thanks so much for your feedback. I am really sorry that you have decided not to come back again this Season. You are right, we really do want to create a garden away from your garden and it wasn't our intention to alienate our loyal visitors.
We decided to keep our booking system because we thought that it made for a more relaxing visitor experience. People don't all arrive at 10:30 and we can ensure that on sunny days or Bank Holidays we don't get too full to be comfortable (especially for the car park, cafe, toilets and craft activities).
We have now increased the number of slots per half hour quite considerably so we don't expect to 'sell out' as we did last season. We are also finding that people are booking much later so it is far easier to make a last minute decision to visit now than it was last season (the other thing to bear in mind is that last season there were far less options for people and as a result, as an open air venue, we were incredibly popular).
I have just changed the booking system as well in the hope that it is now quicker and easier to use, especially for Season Ticket Holders, as it is possible to create an account and manage your own bookings.
Regarding price, we decreased our prices during covid, and have increased this season from £7 to £8. Mainly in response to the Vat reduction ending. You mention Penshurst and Hever (both wonderful places). Their family season tickets for Garden only are £85 and £157.15 respectively. So at £80 for 4 people here I think we are competitive and offer good value, with our seasonal programme of craft activities and family events included in the price.
Sorry for the long response, I of course respect your opinion and decision, I just felt that it was worthy of a proper explanation, especially as this is a public forum and this review will be read by many people.

We booked to take our two grandchildren to the Himalayan Gardens this week; however the weather forecast suddenly changed to a day with heavy rain and strong winds. I asked them if we could change the date ( didn’t want my money back) but they refused. Such a shame, they have taken £26 from me and aren’t prepared to be at all flexible. Sadly for them it means that I certainly won’t bother to rebook nor would I recommend them to family and friends. Why would they take such an intransigent attitude? We’re in the middle of a pandemic; businesses need all the support they can get from consumers. Such a shame; I certainly didn’t think I was asking too much to simply change the date by a week.

I am truly sorry that you feel that way. We are very clear with our terms and conditions and state them at several points during the booking process. We want to be totally transparent about this.
We are currently operating at a greatly reduced number of visitors per day in order to make sure the gardens are safe. That , combined with our period of closure, makes every single slot we have important to us.
This is a totally new way of operating for us, we never planned to have to sell tickets in advance and we would much prefer not to have to operate in this way but the situation we are in leaves this as the only option to be able to open safely. If you book theatre or cinema tickets you accept that there are a finite number of seats per day and so you can't just move them to a new slot as the venue would be missing out, at the moment, it is exactly the same scenario for us.
As with all small businesses right now we are trying to adapt and keep ourselves going and have tried to be as transparent as we possibly can be about our terms. When I said I needed to be fair to all our visitors I meant that we have to uphold these terms as otherwise it isn't fair if we do it for some and not others, and if we did it for all our business would simply not be viable.
And yes, during this pandemic, we do need all the support we can get from consumers.

We found this place trying to find somewhere to go and have a picnic for my partners birthday. Booked it online, cheap prices £6.50 each person and you can get a group discount for more than 5 people.
We absolutely loved it all, really pretty views and lots to do. The girls (11 and 12) loved taking photos of the different flowers and the boys (6 and 9) loved looking for the yeti, they are still talking about it now nearly a week later. Fantastic, would recommend for any age.

My family and I enjoyed our visit very much apart from one thing, which really spoilt our experience. We had lunch at the cafe and the service wasn't as great as it should have been. The food was very nice but cold when it arrived (it should have been hot as they came from the grill bar). The waiter said he would bring us cutlery but he never did. Luckily we had travel cutlery with us. We had a long wait for our drinks (2x tea and 2x juices) which arrived after our food was served and the waitress couldn't tell us which was the Earl Grey and which was the English breakfast. I also asked her for some sugar which she said she would bring over but she never bought it over either. We spent nearly £80 on food and drinks and expected better service. The food was also overpriced (£16 for a steak roll and new potatoes and £15 for chicken thighs on flatbread). We will visit the gardens again but will give the cafe a miss and bring our own food in future.

Hello and thank you so much for your feedback.
I am so sorry, your experience is not what we want for our visitors. The Cafe here is run by an external company so I will be discussing this with them.
I don't want to make excuses for them but they only opened for the season on the 10th of March, with an entirely new team so I think the issues were due to new and inexperienced staff members and teething issues. I feel sure that with more training and working out the best ways to do things this will not happen again as the season progresses. Please be assured that we will be monitoring the situation closely.
I very much hope that you will visit the gardens again.

This my second visit to Riverhill Himalayan Gardens, first was for a walk around the gardens which was lovely the second time we decided to just go for breakfast at Ottos Cafe which is located in the gardens . They have a fabulous menu. We both opted for the BIG Breakfast, my word it certainly lives up to its name! It was presented beautifully, everything was cooked to perfection, we will certainly be recommending Ottos Cafe to others. The cafe its self, clean, well stocked, the staff were very accommodating. I noticed when we left the table, it was cleared down immediately, sanitized of all chairs (4 chairs even though we only used 2) and table. Lovely to be able to go for breakfast slightly out of town or even just a coffee.
I only have one small negative, this is really on the website, I think it might be a good idea make it more noticeable that you can book a slot for Ottos cafe, that you don't have to pay for the gardens just to go to the cafe, maybe a note on the main page stating this.

Our walk around the Gardens on Friday was very enjoyable and i believe this venue would be lovely for families with young children. The Cafe on the other hand was an entirely different experience. It had the look of somewhere going out of business rapidly. Understaffed by inexperienced waitresses. We went in at around 3:30pm (cafe open till 5pm) to find not a single item of food available or on display. When we asked about a slice of cake to enjoy with our tea we were told that they had run out. A cafe that has run out of every item on its menu an hour and a half before closing is in my opinion badly managed. The Family that entered after us inquired about food too and were told that the only thing the could have were ice lollys. This was such a shame to us as it would have been an excellent way to conclude our visit. Would recommend the gardens, however i would avoid the cafe and bring a picnic instead. With an overhaul of the cafe management this attraction would certainly be somewhere i would consider visiting again.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to give us feedback. I will pass on all your comments to Otto's, who run the Cafe. I am very sorry that your visit fell short at the weekend and I agree that this is not ideal and is certainly not the experience that we want our garden visitors to have.
Otto's have been going through a period of change as they re-opened after lock down and have taken all comments on board and as a result have just launched a brand new menu. This is a much more comprehensive menu with all food prepared fresh to order. This should ensure that they do not run out of things in the future whilst also giving people much more choice.
I am so glad you enjoyed the gardens and I do hope you might consider returning to try the new menu in the future.

I simply love the Himalayan Gardens. It is so beautiful to return over and over throughout the season and watch the gardens change with the seasons. Countless beautiful spots to enjoy a picnic or lunch in the café with friends and family and the plants and souvenirs in the shop are very keenly priced too. Be aware that it is quite hilly so not the flattest of walks but breathtaking in parts so well worth it!
