About
Housed in what was intended to be England's first agricultural college, this fine historic building is Pickering's hidden gem. We have 27 areas of displays, covering aspects of local and social history. Thousands of objects are thoughtfully displayed in re-created period shops throughout the building. On our special event days we have a number of working craftspeople, demonstrating printing, rag-rugging, lacemaking, quilling, spinning and butter making. Get hands on in the Activities Room with a range of Victorian games and creative activities for children from dressing up to drawing. On a sunny day enjoy a picnic at our riverside picnic area. We are open 7 days a week from February to November. See website for times and prices.

A good museum ruined!
Aug 2021
What has happened to this once lovely and informative little museum??? I have visited in the past few years and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of looking around the different exhibits and rooms. On a recent visit, all this has changed and not for the better neither!! Why are so many exhibits, previously on display now either behind screens, or even no longer there? What happened to the print room and ts old printing press?? What has happened to the lovely quilt, embroidered with the names of the many volunteers? Where is the Book of Honour to the Pickering war dead? Why does the I-pad now have a rather tacky visitor survey, what happened to the Book of Honour, it's certainly very hard to find on there!! Whoever is responsible for this shambles has evidently pressed the self destruct button, and is doing all they can to bring about the demise of this important, local attraction. My advice to anybody now thinking of visiting it is to spend your money elsewhere, and give this place a very wide berth!!

We have visited many museums and this is definitely number 1 ! The exhibits are amazing and there is so much to see, everything is well cared for and presented to its best. We will definitely visit again before we leave Pickering, the place is a credit to its volunteers !

There is a terrific friendly and informed staff to welcome visitors to this brilliant town life museuem.

The displays are very accurate and thoughtfully put together...my favourite was the cobblers shop which was like taking a trip along the road I lived on to Mr Samuels the cobbler on the corner of our street when I was a boy.

There are thousands of superb items ready to tansport you back in time every where you go in this museum. Brilliant. I can thoroughly recommend this place for all ages what a history lesson or a trip back in time !!

I Will look forward to hearing the busking blacksmith next time we visit.

Thankyou to all involved at this museum.

Interesting to visit

This is well worth a visit. There is a lot to see. There was a blacksmiths demonstration which was really interesting. The children's quiz was great as it helped our 8 year old daughter to spot things as we looked around. The welcome was very friendly.

Great little museum with very friendly staff!

We were on a train ride from Whitby to Pickering and found this when looking for something to do on our free hour before the train went back - very glad we had the time to visit.
Two very friendly ladies greeted us and dealt with the tickets and sent us on our way round the museum - lots of interest to see and very nicely set out, we really enjoyed the tailors room in particular and the old photos of Pickering life were very interesting. We had a great demo and chat in the blacksmiths - and it was really really hot so we appreciated them taking the time!
Lovely little shop with nicely priced products - especially from the blacksmiths! Really added to the enjoyment of our day and we were glad to have found out about it

Holiday visit
Jul 2021 • Family
Visited Beck Isle museum during our holiday in Pickering we were greeted by two very enthusiastic ladies who set our two boys up with quizzes and challenged the boys to complete the quiz. The museum was fairly interesting the best part for the boys was the blacksmith Awesome Dave who involved the boys in working the Bellows and gave a good explanation of the working life of a blacksmith, well done Dave! Overall a good value two hours.

Something of interest for everyone. We visited on a Friday and there was even a working forge in action. Nice area outside to eat your picnic too.
