A half-hidden gem of a local theatre
Feb 2020
I've only ever once before visited this little theatre, but when friends suggested going to see an Alan Ayckbourn play a couple of weeks ago, we jumped at it.

This little theatre is half-hidden because it nestles in a few converted railway arches, hence the name. Unless you knew it was there or had been told about it, you'd never spot it. I didn't count the seats, but there can't be more than around 100, and I gather they put on around 10 productions a year, all of a few weeks' duration. I spoke ot one of their regular actors, who like the others also helps out as a volunteer in many other guises, and who told me that he fonud it a really absorbing and fulfilling hobby.

We really enjoyed the theatre-going experience. Firstly, the place is neat and very clean, aided by the fact that no food or drinks is allowed in the auditorium, and the staff, presumably all or mostly volunteers, were all helpful and enthusiastic. The play we saw was performed in a properly professional way, with no hint of amateurism or casual sloppiness, and the audience was kept interested to the very end. The ticket price was reasonable too, far less than we would have paid to see a play at one of the local professional theatres, as you would expect.

Horley is a small though growing town, less than an hour from London, and with professional theatres in nearby towns such as Brighton, Croydon and Guildford to compete with, so it is important that they have a degree of slickness and professionalism about them if they are to survive. On the basis of what we saw, they should manage to do so, and we certainly intend to returh before long.

Tiny, friendly theatre
Mar 2020
Went to see Life & Beth here last week. The theatre was nearly full which was great to see. The theatre is very small, it gets quite warm through the performance as there isn't any air con to speak of. But its a great little venue! Friendly and helpful staff, make you feel genuinely welcome. The reasonably priced bar only takes cash, but also serves tea and coffee. The performance was very good from the cast. Overall it was a great night out. Will be going again.

Quirky Theatre

Have been here many times and it never fails to impress. The plays are always well done, beautifully acted and well supported. We have seen many good plays here over the last few years. It is worthy checking out/joining. Tickets even for non members are just £12 not bad for an evening out. Give it a go.

A great little place & have some fun

We had been invited to see a play by friends who's son was acting in a play. This led us to picking up some brochures & booking to see another farce by ourselves. Small entrance area, but really friendly, with hot drinks, or alcohol & soft drinks. Booking half time drinks. Comfortable seats, & set for the evening. It is high quality am dram, with travelling groups attending regularly. Great entertainment

Check play before you book

History Boys by Alan Bennett. Bit raunchy but as my title suggests must check out the play before booking. I would certainly not suggest the play however the acting was excellent except for the younger teacher who came over as quite wooden. The rest of the cast could have been professionals. The only female in the cast was superb. Lots of bad language and swearing which for me and my friends made us squirm. Of course this was part of the storyline. The young man who did most of the singing was also as good as any professional. Theatre critics need to attend some of the plays presented at the Arches. Very small theatre, excellent customer service, easy to park. Would certainly go again but check the production first.

A must to see
Sep 2017 • Friends
I go, on average, once a month to see the plays put on by this amateur dramatic group, which are always of very high quality. One might see a comedy or a tragedy or even a Shakespearian play. The prices for seats are incredibly reasonable, and the theatre itself is an absolute gem, being built under the railway arches. Just remember not to wear very high heels, as you have to duck slightly under an internal arch to get to the seating! There is a bar, manned by volunteers, and the prices are very reasonable. Try it soon; you won't regret it.

Excellent quality theatre at local prices
Apr 2017
A quirky building hosts an impressive theatre company which produces a wide range of plays. Although they are amateurs, the quality is extremely high, both dramatically and technically, and the standards of provision and service are excellent.
