We are ocassionally in Southport to visit our friends. To meet up with them we were looking for a location which easily could host up to approx. 12 people, so that everyone could sit together. As the Sandgrounder was recommended to us, we decided to go there.
The location itself is quite spacious. In the center there's the bar counter, where you order your food & drinks, which seems to be a regular thing in the UK. Next and opposite of the bar is the lounging and dining area. At the end of the hallway there is an area with pool tables and table football machines.
Monday - Friday, 4 to 7 pm, it's Happy Hour, which does not include the whole selection of drinks, only a tiny selection, which is indicated on a blackboard behind the bar. Thru the entiire week they offer various food deals.
As we were all together we started drinking and being merry. At a certain time the hunger has to be eased. So we ordered two SG Platters and some sweet potato fries as sides. The platters contained chicken fillets, popcorn chicken and other finger food stuff with various dips. Quite nice, thou a regular quality. As they were on special sale, we got those two for the price of one, which really was a bargain.
As happy we were with seeing each other again, after two hours, we could hardly place our glasses on the table anymore. Simply no one came to take the empty glasses away, so we had to return them ourselves to the bar. I'm not aware if that is another regular thing in the UK. If not, I would consider the service to be fairly poor.
We've entered the Sandgrounder at 2:30 pm and shortly before 8:00 pm we were asked to leave now. After spending hours in there and a fortune in drinks and food I consider that quite rude. The reason why the entire bar was chucked out is that they had to host an annual meeting of some sort of soccer club.
That would have been okay with prioir notice with some sort of sigh or such.
But that "thank you for your money - now please" kinda thing did not leave a good impression at all.
To come to a conclusion:
=====================
SG is a regular pub & sportsbar with nice food.
If you want to drink cheaper or looking for a decent cocktail you might want to check out another place.

Found this place yesterday for a drink and came back today for lunch.
Basic menu but very good food.
After ordering, I realised that meals were half price on a Monday even though it was very reasonably priced to begin with !
Cocktails 2 for 1 most of the time too.
Came back tonight and ordered 2 main courses, 2 cocktails and a pint all for less than £20.

Popped in for lunch and received a warm welcome from bar staff. Ordered food but 15 minutes after ordering a member of staff came over to tell us 2 of the 4 meals we had ordered were not available, so chose an alternative. When food came a side dish didn't arrive with the rest of the meal and we had to ask staff twice where it was. By the time it arrived we had finished the rest of the meal. The food was of a good standard, shame about the service.

This used to be a great pub with a great character and friendly atmosphere. I have stopped drinking here due to the complete lack of of care demonstrated by the staff and manager. Outside is very unwelcoming with tables not cleared or cleaned regularl, 2 rusting battered buckets as ashtrays either side of the front doors. Inside is not much better. The manager John is clearly disinterested and rarely shows his face front of house when he does he just looks scruffy. The glassware is tired and improperly washed. the staff usually having to go through 3 or 4 wine glasses just to find one without lipstick. One member of staff once commented to my wife "I'm just trying to find the right shade of lipstick for you" Miserable looking staff complete the disappointing look of the place. I could go on but quite frankly it's not worth my time.

Went to the sandgrounder. With a couple of friends. First impression lively. Sevice for ordering drink and food good but just wanted a soup but had to have a sandwich. Just wanted a barm or piece of bread but would have been charged for the sandwich . Once sat down all the tables full with glasses on. Went to the ladies toilet. Smelt like damp and smelly mop. Once got our soup and Sandwich cutlery was filthy. Once finished with the soup waited ages for the main. Had to go and ask for it. For the desert a barman or manager not sure. Just passed it not said a word and had a grim look on his face. Not very inviting. Would not go again for a meal. A drink yes

Every time I have been in this bar, the toilets are disgusting. There was even a note on one of the cubicles saying " out of order, well not really but there's no toilet seat so make your own choice"! If they can't keep the toilets clean then what care are they taking in the kitchen??

Apart from a very small menu choice in food I find this place a great place for a few drinks. If you enjoy a game of pool then this is one for you as there are two towards the back. Also, Man V Food competitions are a thing to see here, great also to watch the Sports. Trendy venue. Must say I do like it. Great night had by all.

The place has pretty nice drinks to choose from, Billiard tables to play and lots of space. Seating is readily available however most of the armchairs are very low and a bit tricky to get out of. Bar staff are pleasant enough and the whole establishment is pleasant, but the atmosphere is a bit too clinical and plain but i cannot say it is a bad place to go.
