A wonderful course and a true test of golf. The recent changes are impressive and the course was in excellent condition. The short holes are all impressive and this course is a must play for anyone who likes links golf at it's best. Very friendly and attentive staff.

We played here as a fourball on a golfing trip to the NW. The course was good the first time some years ago but was even better the second time and the changes made have added to the experience. Friendly staff throughout our stay. Some great views here and some classic golf holes and l strongly recommend Hillside GC to you.

Located on England's Golf Coast around Liverpool/Southport and living a little in the shadow of its 3 neighboring Royal courses (Birkdale, Hoylake and Lytham), Hillside is a golf course you must play. An Open qualifying course and venue for the 2019 British Masters and countless amateur championships, the course is testing but great fun to play. When I was there in Nov 2019, the club was remodeling a number of early holes on the front nine. The back nine however was as magnificent and dramatic as everyone says it is. Greg Norman was right. The Hillside back nine does have some on the best holes in Britain. Can I add that the club was so helpful in its many emails sent prior to the booking date and I spent half an hour chatting with the club pro, Brian Seddon and his wonderful boarder collie, after my round. All up, a great golfing experience. Add this course to your list if you're planning to play on England's Golf Coast.

Most overrated course in Britain. Front 9 like a municipal back 9 improves but only slightly. The greens are flat , unkept & too small. Better off on crazy golf down the pier.

One of 3 top links courses on a single stretch of quality links land, a foot path separates it from the most famous neighbour, Royal Birkdale, while on the other side, across the train line is Southport & Ainsdale (S&A).
Welcome from members, pro, buggy master & secretary were all enthusiastic and honest.
The facilities were as to be expected, impressive.
A friendly member split his 4ball to play with me so I wasn't on my own, very generous, it made my day so much more enjoyable.
The course is very well prepared and kept, with the front 9 is a decent challenge, leading you into the round. The half way hut did a top bacon / sausage roll, just what I needed. The back 9 threads through dunes with far more elevation changes, definitely the better 9.
I played on a pleasant windless Spring day, it would be a far tougher challenge when the wind blows. It is clear to see why it hosts top amateur competitions and is used for final Open qualifying.
I would definitely like to play it again, if you go, take your A game.

In between Royal Birkdale GC and Southport & Ainsdale GC is Hillside GC. Perhaps not as well known but certainly the equal to all these great courses. Hosted the final round qualifier several times when the Open is hosted by Royal Birkdale. While not readily apparent from the Clubhouse and 1st tee, there are significant sand dunes to be worked around and through during the round. The Pro Shop and Clubhouse Staff are most welcoming and helpful.

Forget the other golf clubs in the town of Southport, this is the best. The course is immaculate even in December. What was that famous comment about the back nine.
It has ambiance. The clubhouse staff are friendly. The chef, Jason, a joy. The club are very lucky to have him.
As a member, I suppose I am a little biassed. But if you doubt me, just try the club out and tell me if I am wrong.
