About
The Cathedral Church of St German was consecrated as a Cathedral relatively recently, though its shared history goes back a long way with the Cathedral ruin on St Patrick's Isle. Built as a Parish Church in 1893, St German's became the Cathedral Church for the Diocese of Sodor and Man in 1980. It is also one of 5 churches that form the Parish of the West Coast, serving the communities in Dalby, Kirk Michael, Patrick, Peel and St John's.

The cathedral is small but fascinating.

The cathedral is small but fascinating. The gardens develop each year. Lovely to see how the cathedral promotes the Manx language. Lovely organ and brilliant organist.

Gardens are an ambitious work in progress
Jul 2019 • Couples
Although the cathedral itself is interesting we had really come to see the garden. The volunteers in the cathedral were very helpful and I'm glad we took their advice and bought the £2 guide to the garden so we could appreciate the underlying ideas behind all the sections - related to Isle of Man, Christian, global and garden themes. There is still much work to do but it is really worth visiting already.

Lovely cathedral and gardens . Very pleasant staff . Very friendly with a great deal of knowledge about the cathedral and also the surrounding area .. the gardens have been extremely well set out with lots of interesting plants . And lots of information cards telling you the plant types and also a little bit about what they were used for .. lots and lots of apple trees . Inside you can even purchase some apple jam presumably home made ..

A peaceful retreat with plans for the future
Jun 2019 • Couples
We spent a very pleasant hour or so here in the Cathedral and met some very friendly custodians both inside and out, who were very pleased to talk about the building and their plans to keep it a vibrant and relevant centre of the community. Please rethink your plans for underfloor heating. I do not think this is a appropriate heating solution for this building and the disruption will be untenable.

The cathedral is interesting and has a lot of information. In the grounds is the new 'Chartres' labyrinth and fascinating surroundings representing various aspects of the island. However, the iconic sacred symbol of the labyrinth is defaced by inscriptions.

Beautiful interior, colourful, yet serene
Oct 2018 • Friends
A group of ten of us from St. Matthews Church in Birmingham visited the cathedral. We were very impressed with the interior, which seemed warm and welcoming, without losing to solemnity of building. The excellent labelling of the features kept us well informed.
The highlight was a conducted tour of the gardens, which although still a work in progress were a really interesting way of telling the story of Christianity on the Isle of Man.

An integral part of teh heritage of the Isle of Man

The old cathedral is a romantic ruin on St Patrick's Isle. There were plans to restore this in the C19th but in the end it was decided the money would be better spent on a new building. St German's Church was built on a high spot on the edge of the town centre between 1879-84. It was the parish church until becoming consecrated as the Cathedral in 1980.

It is an impressive red sandstone Victorian Gothic building. The gardens are being redeveloped to tell the story of Christianity in the Isle of man from the arrival of the early Irish missionaries in the C6th to the present day.

In many ways, the inside of the building is a bit stark with its plain whitewashed walls. Clever use of uplighters at the top of the nave columns make the underside of the arches glow. The corona above the crossing positively glistens.

At the back of the church is an impressive treasury with the Bishop's crook and church silver dating from the C15th.

Don't miss the Menorah in the south transept, made from used missiles from the Israel/Palestine conflict for an Anne Frank exhibition in 2010.

The chancel apse is small compared with the rest of the church. The Caen stone reredos below the east window has paintings of the four evangelists.

There is usually someone in the church to welcome visitors and talk to them.

If you are expecting a medieval cathedral, you may be disappointed by this, BUT it is the biggest church on the island!
