We had a half here up the bar on a Saturday night after the wrestling at the winter gardens. A lot of locals but friendly atmosphere, decent beer and nice staff. Very well stocked bar ! One of the smallest pubs around but a bit of room at 10pm on a Saturday night. Liked the colour scheme and some lovely things to look at on the wall. Amazing till !

We loved this pub, small and traditional, landlord was a great host. Nice selection of beers and ciders.

A great two room pub with a good choice of cask ales as well as all the usual drinks both hot and cold . Nice and friendly owners as well as the locals being nice and friendly also.A must visit if in the area.

The new landlord has ruined this pub. No longer full of friendly locals, most of them shun the pub now. Tragedy,it's no longer the home of the Ventnor Comic Jazz Band because he doesn't want them! The Volunteer was their 'office'. No longer a pub for the locals,it is HIS pub and he doesn't care if he upsets them. People with dogs are no longer made welcome.Sad.

How did the best pub on the IOW, become the worst pub overnight? There was a poor choice of beers compared to all the years of visiting The Volly. The beer we chose was awful and we stood there looking at each other wondering, "really" and decided to go elsewhere. The pub didn't actually open until Noon, which is not the way it's "always" been. Historically, off the bus, in the Volly at 11 at the latest. Not one other customer came in during the 45 minutes we stood there. Another first. It always "bubbled" with locals.
We later discover that it's "new landlords" which maybe explains it. Bit of work needs doing I think.

read about this little gem in the GBG so while on a cricket trip to the IOW had to pull it in. We weren't disappointed. The guide is very accurate - No kids - No music - No TV -
No one under 60 - No way of seeing what handpulled bitter they're serving coz the locals don't budge. The landlady does a great job as the landlord boozes with his mates. well worth a visit.

Have been a fair few times to The Volunteer or “ the Volly” as locals call it, whilst staying in Ventnor. It’s almost a bit “retro” in feel and a far cry from some of the brasher chrome infested trendy bars that are sprouting up these days. It’s pretty small inside too. However it has character, a nice atmosphere and frequented by the locals which is always a good sign. We enjoyed playing darts (badly) in the back room on our visit. Decent selection of real ales and less so for continental largers. As others have said it’s under new management and think at the time of opening was only doing limited hours at weekends whilst some work was being undertaken upstairs ( not the public areas), let’s hope it’s fully up and running soon and locals and visitors to the Island can enjoy “the Volly” for years to come!

So friendly and quirky. Smallest pub I've been in but that's what makes it so adorable. Live music also. Very friendly staff and locals Love it
