Quick visit

Only found this ruin by chance. Two nearby free car parks allow you to walk in the grounds.
Some signs provided historical info.

A changing landscape
Sep 2021 • Couples
This castle was once on the shore but the coast has slitted up leave the castle landlocked. This is not such a good example of the ring of stone as so.

Castle trip
Aug 2021 • Family
This a lovely place if you like views and having a picnic. There’s not much to do but it’s nice to read about the history of the castle and have a look around. We will not be rushing back to this place. You defiantly need nice weather to visit here. 😊

Wonderful Attraction From Edward 1st to MacDonalds!
Jun 2021 • Couples
A Wonderful Attraction Spoilt by MacDonalds!, waste, wrappers, bags, sauces, the whole site was littered with their waste scattered across a wide area. It’s a disgrace.

Could have been better
Jul 2021
Good points are that the car park is free as is the castle - its a ruin and is interesting for 5 minutes. Of the only two parts that looked good - the better was stairs up the highest (4 floored) tower and was locked off. Surely not for warding off Covid or flu or whatever as passing someone on stairs in an open space is not a risk ...

Great for a picnic and scenic walk, with free castle entry and parking
May 2021 • Couples
We visited for a picnic when travelling through North Wales on holiday. This spot is a hidden gem, with free parking, picnic tables and lovely views over the castle and estuary. You can have a stroll through the castle area for free, and also use the lovely scenic footpaths for a walk.

Go when the Sun shines
Jun 2021 • Family
The Castle is nice in the Summer it's clean and well kept, it's free entry and car park also, it's snow ideal place for a pic nik, also there are reffreshments not far away at the side of the lifeboat Station, you can spend an hour or so in there, great free day out. Don't take my word for it just go there. But go when the sunshine for a better day for the kids.

Very impressive
May 2021
There is something rather atmospheric about the ruin of Flint Castle.
I find myself trying to imagine what it was like when it was on the shore-line surrounded by a sea-water moat, with the only safe approach to the castle being by boat.
Now it is rather moody and forlorn on the silted up estauary, but it is in a wonderful locations and the views all round are beautiful. I've been several times now in different seasons and it never fails to impress

An unusual castle, in fair condition
Apr 2021
This was the first of Edward I’s castles. The design is unique for the UK; the keep is outside the castle walls, in the moat. If you’re interested in castles from this time. don’t miss it. The town of Flint was also the first of Edward I’s walled towns.
There are very informative notice boards in and around the castle which give you an insight into its history. Internet access on a mobile device will also improve your visit.
The towers are accessed by stairs. I found the walk in the arched corridor around the keep fascinating.
Admission is free. The castle always closes at 4pm
Getting there: SatNav was not good. TomTom dumped us in the middle of a housing estate! Luckily Google helped and took us to a car park close to the castle, but not the one for the castle which has a better view.
There are no toilets.
Access for the disabled into the castle courtyard is level and excellent, however all towers are reached by stairs, so that may give problems. I managed some of the stairs, but they were difficult, and most steps were higher than modern steps, so it depends on your disability how much you can see. I didn’t attempt the modern spiral staircase in one tower, but I hated spiral staircases before I was disabled.
I’d highly recommend it, even if you plan to visit other Welsh castles. You will find the unique features fascinating, and the castle is in a lovely open location by the River Dee.
