Redburn Country Park is probably one of the less known designated Country Parks in Northern Ireland but it is a real gem, if you can tackle some of the very steep hills. But the reward of tackling the steep hills is beautiful landscape views of the Belfast area and parts of the County Antrim coastline including Carrickfergus town. Lots of tree cover for the summer and plenty of fallen leaves for the autumnal walks, there is a mix of winding trails that either climb or fall from the hills behind Holywood, County Down and there are plenty of benches to catch your breath. Highly recommend a visit to this area whenever you have a few hours spare.

From just moving into Holywood I had to take a walk in Redburn Forest! It may have some steep levels but it is all worth it when you get to the top. The forest is great for dogs and can be taken off the lead. The veiws are also amazing, you can see Belfast and even the planes landing into the runway! There are also some minor waterfalls and a well. Another thing that is a must see is the 'Bear pit' which has been there since the late 1800's. This is an experience that has to be visited by everyone!!

This former home of the owners of the biggest whisky distillery in the world in its time, the Dunvilles. The father was an airballooner, and the son was a zoologist who had his own private zoo here. You can still see the remnants of the old Bear enclosure. The views of Belfast are astounding, and that is good enough reason to visit. Bring a flask of coffee or a wee mini bottle of red wine, and sit on a bench at the top to watch the sun go down [but wrap up!] It also has lovely swathes of beech woodland that is stunning in Autumn. Easy to get to with the 28 service on the Metro Bus, but even the regular 3a service will take you close enough to the first entrance. Well worth a visit!!

Redburn Country Park has several starting points. One is at Knocknagoney where you can park in the layby. Another is from the Old Holywood Road opposite the gates of Palace Barracks, where you can park in the residential estate of Firmount Crescent. Then you have the option of parking at Redburn Community Centre at the top of Jacksons Road or my personal choice, park at Redburn Cemetary and start off at the old school playing fields.
The beauty of Redburn Country Park is that it is always quiet and peaceful with just the click of a golfball as you pass Holywood Golf Course. The walk can be as easy or as strenuous as you choose for both walkers and joggers alike, with a selection of well maintained paths leading to the higher ground or the lower ground. The high ground delivers fantastic views over Belfast Lough and the Docks area of Belfast. In Autumn the pathways are leafy and in summer there is plenty of shade under the trees. There is some interesting History behind the park land with the old Dunvilles House at it's centre, sadly no longer standing. There are just some rusty iron railings as a memory of it's grandeur.
If you're visiting Holywood and you enjoy an hour or two's walk with or without dog's , make Redburn Country Park a must as a pleasant way to spend a morning or afternoon.

Redburn country park is a fantastic place to visit just outside of Belfast. There are beautiful panoramic views across Belfast lough and plenty of space to let your dog roam about. It is a popular spot for dog walkers, runners and walkers.

Great childhood memories of walking the many paths of this country park. it hasn't changed much in forty years. I love walking it in autumn. It is so quiet and my dogs just love it.

Worst place I have ever visited for a walk in NI - sorry but that's the truth . Mucky , dirty, dismal and even the view over Belfast Lough wouldn't make it worth visiting.

Redburn is a really great park for a good walk! Lots of different routes to take and some challenging uphill sections! Quite easy to get lost but fun at the same time! Takes a good hour/hour and half to get the whole way round!

Is it suitable for small children; 2 year old?

It's suitable but paths are quite steep in places (and muddy) You might want to bring a buggy along incase they get tired.
